What brand of APU do you use on your truck?
How do you like it?

My SIL is looking into getting a APU for his new truck and is looking for ideas.

With the $10,000 price tag I told him I would be looking into a Honda EU2000i or even a 3000 he could mount on the cat walk and a portable stand alone A/C unit that can be vented threw the window.
Even with a tri fuel conversion so he could run the generator off LP and the mounting box/hardware I am thinking he could get it done for $3000 or less depending on what generator he chooses.

With the $150 estimated savings in fuel per week over idling the truck motor he needs to do something before summer gets here.

I don't have one, can't justify the 10 grand. I have a power inverter and hang a fan in the vent and that's good for most days. I usually idle less than 10 days a year total so there is no way I could justify one. If he does a lot of driving in the south that would change things tho. I have an Espar heater that works good for winter use. Dart used to offer them, but quit because they are such high maintenance that most just hang on the truck not being used. I tried to use those gas generators with a room airconditioner too, but that wasn't good either. The generators can't take the banging from the road and getting gas is a huge PIA. If I was going to do it today I would look carefully at one of the battery operated ones. They will give 10 hours of cooling without the engine.

Unless things have changed, there are too many places that LP is not allowed. I am thinking about tunnels more than anything.

We had TK APU on Ftl fleet, They are nice, set your thermostat and they start up and run till cab and sleeper are right temp, warm or cold and turn off.Saves a lot of fuel and Idling ware and tare off the main truck engine. Start back when temp gets out of range. Runs off trucks fuel tank and coolant. Need to watch the drivers don't turn them off when home for the weekend. Guess they just want the truck to be cool when they get ready to go. LOL.

So you saying a R/V with LP battle can not go threw a tunnel cause we are talking same size bottle.

The LP came up because DOT requires the fuel tanks to be mounted so carrying a gas can around is not a option. Another thing is fuel tanks can not be gravity fed unless it is the small tank that comes on the generator.
They also limit the fuel tank size to 8 gallons for gas or LP.

So if he goes the generator route he is limited to diesel and taping into the truck tanks; hauling gas daily; or mounting 1 or 2 LP tanks.
2 LP tanks should last him all week.

A 4000 watt Onan burns 1 1/2 to 2 lbs per hour of propane. So 10 hrs. you'll use up most of a 20 lb.bottle.So I don't think propane would be the ideal way to go.Ron
