Sick and Tired of It.

Snow is what we're sick and tired of. Went to bed at 2:30 am , woke up at 6:00am and snow was here. Yesterday my son got the garden cultivated with the JD cultivator, everything went smooth, 706 fired right up, cultivator worked perfect. Son planted 5 sets of onions (hybrid candy)which is now under snow. The onions we can't buy here locally at the store, but these you can eat like an apple, about the size of an apple. We put commercial fertilizer and composted fertilizer on them. Was hoping this week to get more composted manure from the bottom of our hill put on the rest of the garden and tilled, but not now. The ground is so soft we can't plow it with the truck, have to skim it off with the Bobcat bucket so we don't tear the driveway up. It's really nice to have the equipment, regardless of how old it is.This keeps up it will be June before the seed goes in.This is the worst winter we've ever seen for the continuous amount of snow.Any predictions on when it's going to quit snowing??? At least the puppy keeps us entertained,he will be 1yr old in July.

Finally got the 30-06 zeroed in,keeps us from using a scope on it.Been reloading military brass for the 300 winchester mag, can finally get it, before you couldn't buy any brass for it. Factory ammo is too much for my taste. Been trying to keep busy,so I don't lose the rest of my mind.lol.

LOU

soundguy, you are just behind the times! It is no longer global warming. We now call it "climate change" - that way, no matter which way the weather decides to trend, "we" have it covered.

Wish I had known that method when I was younger and we flipped a coin to choose sides for baseball. Instead of calling heads or tails, I would have just called "coin side change!"

Snow and cold has been lingering in the north, I've been following the snow cover maps. Some years in recent times spring has been real early around here others not, we had no snow in '12, literally, we had more in October early November '11. Apricot trees are a bit late this year, usually bloom mid April, so the first of May is odd, then the Pears, then the Apple trees, in that order, very possible and seemingly rare to see all 3 at once, from recollection, happened in spring of '11, which was a harsh winter, lots of snow, some subzero weather, we were colder this year I think, most people I know who burn wood, used a lot more.

I've yet to till the upper garden and plow the larger garden patch, the latter of which was just a tad too moist, I'll wait so I don't get clods, the upper is well drained, both on hill facing south, both get all the sun, we have rain now, but it will dry fast, I'm planting early, worst case I have to cover up for frost, have to make a run to the green house, have some started at a friends greenhouse.

Been working on next years firewood before it gets hot and the bugs are out here and another farm, so far so good, 5 cord to buck and split at the house, and I can't even think about how much I need to drag in, storm damage and clean up, and recent dead elm, good honest work, been anxious all winter, snow was too deep to work in for a good part of it, last few years I worked outside in it, not this year, one does get sick of the cold after a good while LOL !

Best wishes Lou, hopefully another good productive season with the garden, and those discarded seeds you got last season are of good benefit.

Opposite here in California. over 90 degrees today. That heat is sucking the rain we got last week right back out of the ground. Stan

soundguy,
Right now I could go for a little warming, sunshine, even dry weather, but enough of the white crap.lol. Thanks for the reply,
LOU

37Chief,
Even with all the fans we have blowing towards you, seems this white stuff just won't go away. I tried to ship it,but the tape keeps getting wet.LOL.
Seems some places that need any moisture can't get it, but we've had our share of white stuff, working on close to 7 months of seeing it.Thats too long for me, time to see some green grass and flowers. Thanks for the reply,

LOU

David G,
According to the weather guessers, all we was to get was rain, but no, their wrong again. Seems they should only get paid when they forcast the weather right. That would cut down on this crap shoot.lol. Keep dry,

LOU

Billy NY,
We got rid of most of it, then had another foot show up around the 15th, that sorta disappeared,
and now this hits again. We've been going at it since October, and like you seeing it this late is quite annoying. The poplar trees were just starting to bud out, could see 1/2 of the lawn and the sides of the roads.

Right before this our apple trees haven't even blossomed out buds yet, nothing on the peach trees, the ground was dry enough to cultivate with the digger,(were all sand soil) no frost in the garden. Thought we would be done, butttt Noooo.lol.

The wife started some seeds a week ago to get a start on tomatoes, peppers etc, but hopefully the weather will cooperate soon. At least we've got some start on outside work(garden) and some yard cleanup from fall.

2 years ago the garden was in around the 2nd week in April, but last year was into last week of May. This year Mother Nature seems to be playing hide the peanut with us.A couple of nice days warm weather, windows open, then the rest of the time the wood furnace hasn't stopped going.

To date we've went thru about 14 cord of wood and still counting.Son has been cutting around our place to clean up dead trees to burn. Never went thru more than 12 cord of wood up at our place since 1988. He's hoping to get an early start on next years wood (20 cord, lol)so not to run out again. We definitely hate Indian cutting wood.

I'm surprised the farmers around here aren't plowing their fields in protest, but haven't been out to find out.

Thanks for the best wishes on the garden and I hope you the same.Probably going to get the rest done by mid May if all works out, will post pictures of the garden as it progresses.
Warmest regards,
LOU

Tramway Guy,
well we will find out on onions atleast. Snow shouldn't hurt them too much with the warm composted manure and chemical fertilizer. Thanks for the reply,
LOU

Took a few pictures Monday morning here in NY Catskill Mts. We are in southern NY and about 1500" as you can see daffodils just flowering, grass just greening up and trees not doing much. Also still some of my snow piles left. At work they backfilled and compacted around the house we"re building, in one patio area the ground sunk over the warm weekend, still frost down deep, not doing patios until last thing to give frost time to leave.

Looks like you're all ahead of us. There are only a couple of Amish ladies working their kitchen garden, usually a hot box raised bed affair. It's too soggy to plow or spread manure, grass in the fields is only a couple inches high so there's not enough to graze. The Elms are just starting to flower, pu ssy willows just starting in a few warm spots, no daffodils or crocus yet. Old timers say we're 3 weeks behind, but a few say this is what they used to get.

I moved out of the mountains to get away from this 20 years back. I guess it followed me.

(quoted from post at 21:49:25 04/29/14) dr sportster,
Never heard the song, could you hum a fews bars?lol.

Lou-I just picked up a 338 Winchester Mag and I was wondering what your thoughts were on that caliber. I know you are big on the 300 win Mag, but I couldn't pass this one up.
It will be used only for Elk and MD out west.

(quoted from post at 19:55:20 04/29/14) Think we got sold a bill of goods?

Yes ,we've been sold a bill of goods and many bought it without a second thought. Climat change has been takeing place since the first time the sun came up and the human race didn't have any thing to do with either event.

dej(Jed),
They all ways told me bigger is better, and I believe it.Sounds like you are going to be shooting a winner. No need to chase the game all over he ll. Better to have a little more than not enough.Would enjoy seeing a picture of it.Just remember to hold it tight to your shoulder and lean into it.Best advice I can give.

sms,
Nice photos, thanks. Our tulips just started to show some life before the last snow, now their still covered with snow.Oh by the way I love the GMC pickup,we have 2 GMC's love them both, nice ride.
Our trees aren't doing much either, frost is still in some parts of soils, buds are just starting to show on the peach trees, grapes are still bare,no buds, but on the brighter side the garden seed is still in their packages and not sprouting.lol.Thanks for the photos,

LOU
