semi load of hay

So talking to the owner of the barn where we have our horse she was telling us how much hay she buys in the fall.

I am not getting something, so what would be the max load (tons) of square horse hay bales you can fit on a semi trailer?

I assume a flat bed would hold more than a box.

I know the GVW of a semi is normally 80k pounds but hay isn"t that dense so I have no idea what the load would be.

Thanks,
Bill

I sometimes haul big squares from Ks. to Ky. 33 3x4x8 fills a 53 ft. box. Goes 38 to 41k depending on how tight baled

I buy semi loads of hay every three weeks. On my step deck semi trailer I get 42 3x3x8 large square bales. I think they weigh 750-800 pounds each.

I sell hay here in NNY. I loaded two loads last week. First load, 48 ft reefer, 566 bales approx. 12 tons, 2nd load 53ft van, 720 bales, approx. 28,800 lbs. I hope this helps. I've got hay left if anybody's looking.

Sent a stepdeck to Texas 3 years ago, can't remember the length but we got 670 sm squares on it. Couldn't go any higher for the 13' limit in height

I've unload several loads of 57 3x3x8's.6 rows of 3 wide x 3 tall with one stack of 3 cross ways.800lbs.each.45000 and some change. You can get'em on a 48 footer if you let the ends hang over a little bit.

A semi with an aluminum flatbed can haul somewhere in the area of a 53000 pound payload depending in the weight of the tractor. That would be, just guessing, 900 bales at 60 pounds each. Will that many bales fit? I have never been involved with small squares on semis. We haul 36 3X4X8 high density corn stover bales weighing 1200 each on a semi flatbed. We are 10000 pounds under the limit but maxed out on height. Jim

No , i loaded a load of nice tight alfalfa small squares one time out in South Dakota on a RGN and we loaded to a shade over 13 foot high and i was a WEEE bit over on width LIKE a foot and end up just 400 lbs over the 80000 limit with full tanks and did not get 800 bales on and ya can load a lot more bales on a RGN then ya can on a flat bed as my trailer was 53 foot . you also can load more bales on a Step deck then a flat . So take 80400 deduct 35700 I had about 740 bales on that load . I could not go no higher and stay under 13foot 6 inches and the bales hung out over the ft. deck about a foot and a foot over the rear . I just know Gary was impressed at how many bales they did get on over a step deck , as the bottom well took two layers flat and on layer on edge to even out with the back deck which was the same height as a step deck

we bought a load of those compressed bales, they take a big round bale and run that thru some kind of machine and then compress it and bale it, the bale nearly doubles when you cut the bands, anyway a full trailer held 720 bales, thankfully for me, on pallets, one stolen forklift belonging to one of my friends, and unloading wasnt bad at all compared to what it would have been without the pallets
