Ot: Mac problem

It was locked up when I got home so I turned the power off. Now when I turn it on it sounds like it is trying to read a disc and than a folder with a question mark shows up in the middle of the screen and I cannot do anything

It has to be your imagination. I have a Toshiba myself but anyone who has a Mac will tell you that they never have a problem.

Had that happen on an old MacBook I had. It was a failure of the hard drive. Thing would sit there and you could hear something whirring in the computer and then the question mark would pop up. Hope you had things backed up.

Just a thought. If it is a laptop, disconnect the power and remove the back-up battery for a minute or so, then reverse the process. If this works, you owe me a beer ! HTH

MAC hard disks fail like all others. That is why they created time machine, it makes for a simple restore.

I have transitioned to SS drives, wow what a difference.

I had that problem with a Dell desktop about 3 weeks ago. I put it in the car to take to a guy to fix it and it was in the car through sub zero temps about 3 days. He had it a short while and called me and said there was nothing wrong with it. He brought it back and it's worked fine since then.
Stick it in the freezer.

That is an old simple trick but your hard drive is still about to die. It may work for a while but it's days are numbered.

If you get it running, make sure it is backed up to a time machine before you shut it off again.

Spoken like a true believer - hang in there!

The question mark means it can't find a working harddrive to boot from. Freezer trick might get the drive spinning, have something ready to copy everything off it asap. The drive won't work much longer.

Not so much a mac problem but common to all computers eventually.
