having trouble starting a 1974 Chevy c 60 its got spark and getting gas but it keeps backfiring though the carb maybe timing its got a 350

If not the gear, it could be moisture in the cap, or a bad cap. It is the time of year that speaks to condensation in the cap. Jim

Bring No1 piston to tdc on the compression stroke then see where your rotor is pointing. It should be at the No1 plug tower. Also check your plug wires on the cap to make sure they not cross wired to the wrong plugs. It's probably this firing order. Hal
1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 Note which way the rotor rotates
as they need to be installed in that direction.

Need more info, Has it been sitting a long time and your trying to get it started or its been running and your just starting up for the day. Have you checked to see if the wires are on the right plugs? Put a timing light on and see if timing is right. Compression check for stuck intake valve. Check play in the distributor shaft. How old are the wires are they rubbed together somewhere? Good luck with it

yep I remember that.... but those trucks have a double roller chain in them and four bolt mains, not the same as 1/2 tons.

Ran one of those under a 24' Jerr Dann roll deck. Great set up....when it would start. If there was a cloud in sight it would not start on its own. Hook another truck to it and you would barely get the chain tight and it would run. Always wanted to change the distributor over to HEI...never did though.
