For a computer dummy(me) how's a simple method to determine what if anything is running in the background of my computer? If there's something running in background how do I determine if it's necessary? The reason I ask is YT pages take a long time to load.

pen Windows Task Manager & see what is running & how much CPU, how much memory, etc. it is using.

'm not certain it is same in all operating systems (XT, Win7. Win8, etc.), but I hit ctrl/alt/delete, holding each until I have all 3 down & it comes up.
 
on my puter i right click in the task bar (where red the arrow points ) and then hit " task manager "

orry, but I can't help you there.
 
In Task Manager, look for processes that are burning a lot of CPU time. Anything with a "CPU" reading of more than 10 is suspect. Often the problem will be your browser, caught in some sort of loop caused by a poorly designed web site. Not much you can do other than avoid those sites.

Task manager is a good start, but if your internet speed is slow there's a good chance you have malware that's clogging your network connection. You can see exactly what the network traffic is using Wireshark. It is a very powerful tool, but it has a fairly steep learning curve. It is free.
