Mower blades

I'm looking to get a second set of blades for the JD 425 w/ 60" deck. A new set from Mother Deere is $75 plus my time/gas to get there.

On ebay there are several options, from Oregon, Genuine JD, Gator, etc.... Have you guys tried the Oregon ones? The cheapest I can find are the Oregon ones, as both high lift and Gator, and they go up from there. I just let it blow out the side, so no mulching. I try to cut it when it hould be, but it doesn't always happen like it should.

What do you guys recomend?

I have had very good performance from "Stens" blades. The hold an edge well & are easy to sharpen.

I have had good luck with the Oregon and Stens blades.

I do not care for the Gator blades. They have less lift. They work fine in the fall with leaves.

Also as to the cost of blades. You can get good or you can get cheap but not good and cheap.

I needed 3 blades for my 72 inch woods. I googled the numbers off blade. got a set of 3 for $47, MADE IN USA TOO.

There is a company called flail master who sells blades. I bought a set for my woods mower, for about half the price as woods wanted. I bought two sets, and got free shipping, plus no tax, and delivered to my front door. Stan

I put a set of Oregon blades on my Gravely 60 inch mower. Had Stens on before. The Oregon blades are thicker than Stens. Stens blades were softer and actually bent from mowing heavy grass. Like the Oregon blades.

I don't like gator or mulching blades, they make more grass stick to
the underside of the deck. They work OK, in the fall for chopping
leaves, but not in heavy wet grass of early spring. All you need to
do is know the measurements of the blades you need, and google
them, or check fleabay. Also, agrisupply.com can find them by
application, all you need to know there, is the size deck, and model
of your tractor.

Deere is still cheaper on their blades and Oregon blades then anyplace else I have found. At least on our 46"-54" and 60"decks.2 to 4 dollars on a blade.

Those Deere blades are pretty good stuff. I've had the same set of Hi-lift blades on my 48" deck for 5 years now. They get sharpened twice a year with a flat file. They have never seen a grinder. Unless I bend one I think I can get at least 2 more years out of them.

All I buy are Oregon blades for our Toro's and exmark's, have
had real good luck and can't beat the price.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like Oregon gets big points for quality. Oddly enough they are the cheapest ones on eBay. Can get a set of 3 for about $40, where as a set from the local dealer is $75.

Not bad, but I also need to buy a new seat. Deere wants $135 for that....

I'm using their tiller tines on my Troy Bilt tiller. They came from one of their warehouses in Harrisburg PA. Hal

Don,
We needed a new seat for our JD mower and JD"s
price made my nose bleed. Wife checked on Ebay and we ended up with a JD seat that was near new and cost a fraction of what Mother Deere charges.

oregon blades are ok it just depends on which
class you get. if have fusion or not etc. sell
mostly fusion with high lift. the thicker heavier
blades i do notpush them since it takes more power
to get them going. thinner blades cut better for
what we see going thru the shop. blade run from
17.00 to 27.00 dollars a blade here. its same
supplier stens,oregon . silver/streak is another.
rotary handle same stuff also. we find short lines
items to be actually higher than when i get from
original brand. the high lift ones will throw more
rocks so just beware of that. otherwise stick the
basics on and go. two simplest things for mowing
keep motor full rpms and sharp blades.

I'll look up your blades tomorrow, I became a dealer because
of the quantity of Oregon parts, blades, etc. we buy. Blades
for our 60" Z's were around $8 last year I think. We sharpen
weekly and I have 2 crews that mow rougher areas around
factories and commercial settings so you never know what got
thrown in the lawn since last week. That's why $8 blades are
fine with me! We hit some unbelievable things...
