:) Hi Everyone, I just bought a used Tractor 1964 ford 4000 industrial 4 cyl w/5 spd w/front loader and gannon box and it runs great and looks as old as it is, But the problems are...looks like the center axle is bent the front wheels are in at the top and the power steering is not working, its a bugger to turn. My Questions are... Can the center axle be bent back and if not how hard is it to replace it? and how do I check and see whats wrong with the power steering? Yes I'm mechanically inclined I just know nothing about this tractor.
Please give me your feed back, any would be great!
Thanks

Photos would help immensely here. Need to see what axle is under it, the general purpose front end is a "swept back" design by virtue of what it is. If you have the front end of a light industrial, its not adjustable, heavier design and should have larger spindles, there are a few versions of those.

If for some reason you think those front wheels, one or both are "toed" in at the top, and its speculation on my part, but its possible one or both are fatigued, I broke one last year on an earlier version tractor, an 850 with the GP front end, one wheel was doing that, it should have tipped me off, but I did not get it, until it finally broke in the field. Just a possibility, but I distinctly remember seeing the same thing prior to, when on flat pavement.

The center axle pivot pin is not that difficult of a job, its a wear point on these, maybe less with an industrial front end, but still, more so on a tractor with a loader and GP front end. If the center axle is really bent, its beyond me, never saw one with that problem before, bending something like that and then trusting it afterwards, that could be a real problem. I would suggest making repairs correctly, given it has a loader on it, something fails with the loader up, hard to say what it will do, I was lucky I was headed down hill and the bucket was low when my spindle broke. The biggest concern is checking the wear of the bore of the axle where the pivot pin goes through, if excessively worn, it may have to be bored and a bushing installed to bring it back to acceptable dimensions, for the new pin and bushing. The bolster that attaches to the block may need work, I have seen them offered already rebuilt, you can rebuild those so that all new parts can be fitted, I have to do my 850 soon, I know what it entails thats for sure, really need to see what front end is on that tractor to provide any advice though, lot of posts on front ends of these on the ford forum here.

I would suggest a shop manual, ford shop manual, good uses or reprint of same, ebay is a good place to start, along with a parts manual as well.

Power steering, I am familiar with these on that era ford tractor, but don't know a heck of a lot about troubleshooting, obviously your pump needs to be providing adequate pressure, not sure what the deal is on the inside of the power steering box, likely between the two somewhere. I've yet to accomplish repairing mine, do have a factory supplement on power steering for 600-800 tractors, for reference, need to find it again first though LOL !

Thanks Billy NY, I will take some pic's and try to figure out how to get them posted, I'm new to this forum and having a hard time getting around, but will figure it out.
Thanks

I have a 4500 TLB with power steering. If it steers with difficulty, check the oil level in the reservoir. If it doesn"t maintain level, check the crankcase for overfill. There is a gasket where the pump bolts to the motor.....if it fails, the oil drains into the crankcase.

No problem, I'll reply to that address so you can send them. However, there are 2 ways to post images here that I am familiar with. One, is directly from your pc, just use the advanced tools, upload photo it will prompt you to select from your PC's directory, just select the photo, hit upload, then hit continue, repeat until you are done, and remember to hit continue, there is an option to cancel before that, so you can change or delete a photo if its the wrong one.

The other is using a remote hosting site, like photobucket, have to use a little code then paste the direct link to the site within that code, real easy, can't type the code here or it will prompt the code used on this site. use "<" (no quotes)to open, then type img src = after the equal sign, paste the direct link you copied off photo bucket, (its the url) and close that with ">" again no quotes it will link your image from the remote site, and you can type in text in between these links for descriptions, I am not sure how to do that with method directly off your file directory, text will follow at the end of you images, you will see those first. Seems theres also an issue with the photos orientation when posting directly from the phone, not sure what thats about, but there have been posts where the photos need to be turned around.

In any case, I'm curious to see what you have there with this tractor, so I'll send you an email, with the subject "YT Mag post re: ford tractor"

I have a '57 841 that the front end is wore out on...I'll be interested to see what you guys say about re-building the front axle "hanger" and the pin.

Hey Billy NY, Well I power washed my front end of my tractor and using the front end loader I was able to lift it up and down to see all the movement in the front end, I have less than 1/8" of play in the center axle area around the pivot shaft, and movement between center axles and knee axles, spindles and very little in wheel bearings.
I noticed the 5/8" bolts holding the axles together were not all the same and some seemed to be missing so I went out and bought 8 new bolts, washers, lock washers and nuts. When replacing them some of the bolts were threaded all the way to the bolt head and had worn down were the axles were rubbing on them. After replacing all the axle bolts I let the front end down and it was 50% better than before.
Now on the spindles there was 1/8" movement also, are there bushing kits for them or do they need to be replaced?

Thanks for you help
