Got 300 home

So I got my Grandpas Farmall 300 home yesterday. I drove it home since they only 4 miles from us and I figured it needed ran. First mile of trip the hydraulic pump kept engaging and I could see one of the main hoses coming off pump tighten up. It would bog down engine and burst out of it. After the first mile it stopped for a bit and started again. Where is the fluid check for it? Is that a good place to start? Thanks

First off, nice looking tractor! I love my 300. There should be a plug for filling and one for checking . I believe they are on the left side of reservoir under gas tank. Good luck with your tractor.

Replied at the other site, didnt see your message here.

Your hyd linkage must be messed up, open center hyd the
pump always flows oil at almost no pressure until you move a
lever.

So:

Either some hose is blocked within the hyd system.

The ports directing the extra flow of oil are plugged up.

Or your hyd valves are not set right, most likely. Jiggle those 2
hyd levers there on the right side.

Don't run it without hyd oil, your pump gets real unhappy real
fast.....

Your power steering, if you have, runs off the same pump, was
the power steering causing the problem? Just thought of
this....

The add and check hole for the hyd oil is in front of the brake
pedals, that angled little plug. Look in, it should be about full
there. Anyhow we always about fill that hole up to the threads.

As I mentioned on the other site, check your independent pto
also, that is a seperate resivor, don't be like me and forget.....

It is not an open center system. It is a Demand pressure system. There is a very small pressure (control pressure) in the system when the levers are in the neutral position. The pilot valve/regulator has a orifice and screen in it that often plugs up (especially the screen) and causes periodic or continuous pressure to be applied. The on line parts diagrams detail the location. (in the valve body in the first segment of the stack of valves) 99% probable cause. Some had a small orifice drilling. It can be taken to .040" IIRC to assist with controlling the pulsing. Jim
