Wheel Horse Lawn Mower smoking.

I have an old WH C175 with MANY hours of trouble free service. I have owned this machine since 1982 and engine has had no repairs, just serviced regularly. I have rebuilt countless small engines but have never rebuilt a twin Kohler.
I have been planning to rebuild this engine because of smoke on startup but no smoking or other problems when operating.
I would have to add approximately 5 oz. of oil after cutting two acres of grass.
Strange thing is, now there is no smoke on startup and after two cuttings, oil level is on the full mark??
Any ideas why?

Did you change oils lately? We were running rotella in our tractors but switched to delvac and the oil consumption dropped significantly.

No, I have used Chevron Dello 400 30# the entire time I have owned it. Until it started smoking, it would be down about 1/8 inch on dipstick, after a whole season of cutting.
Also-to wc mike, I have never encountered a small engine, of this type, with "valve guide seals" but I can assume the guide are worn. Just can't understand how it fixed itself, or at least stopped for a while?

There is a WH site and the people there are wonderful just like this one. Links to videos showing step by step rebuilds. try them out you are sure to be pleased.

Don,

That is interesting, found the same thing on high houred 4020. It sucked the Rotella and no Delvac.

Chances are it's the valve seals leaking a little. As it warms they seal better. There are some magic seal liquids out there that help the seals regain their flexibility and elasticity, might be worth a try.
