400 Amp Diesel pipliner. Was welding perfect last week. Started it today and have 110 but no current to welding leads. Have checked two fuse and connections . What do I check next.

I have the same welder with a 2 cyl Detroit. Mine will not weld unless it runs full throttle and there is no gov. on it. Best welder I have owned can burn rod all day long.

ps changed my handle to post pics. (black)

This one only has three positions on the engine control. Kill, a notch for idle, and trip it for welding which is high throttle . I just cannot get buy without it. Got to get it going. This one is 4 cylinder perkins.

I have an SAE 300.....when it won't weld, I remove the brush cover (torpedo looking thing...), and push on the brushes while the engine is running. Shines them up real quick...Takes about a minute, and you are welding again.

I had one looked just like that one but mine was a SA200 with a Continental 4 cyl flathed gas motor. I never used a welder I liked better, but red squirrels got inside it and chewed the wiring and had to be rewound. Shot 3 of those little miserable suckers yesterday.

Got a welder just likeithad same problem it was a broken field wire we looked it over for hours called a pro to come look at it took him about two mins to find it
With field wire broke it would not energize the field and no out put to welding leads
Double check your brushes to make sure they are free but check all wires and connections it hopefully is a simple fix like mine was

Update: Sometimes, I have to to kick in the high idle and set it to get it welding then it welds perfect, and have no further problems.

TD I am certain you are right , will be something simple , I just have to find someone that knows what to look for.

O.K. I looked at them but that sounds simple enough, will be in the morning but will give that a try. Could not figure out how it could have 110 and not have the dc but maybe you are right, will give that a try.

That's a darn good HD welder and the Perkins engine is desirable too. Might need to use a commutator stone on the armature or maybe flash the fields. NEVER use emery cloth on the commutator though. It can cause unwanted arcing. Most likely a very simple fix. You could e-mail Bill's welder repair and they'll probably tell you exactly what's wrong. Why do you have it on negative polarity? You could try moving that switch back and forth too.

Stick, you were the first one I could think of today , figured you might know. I think I usually weld on Postive but tried that switch and just left it wrong. I removed the positive lead and replaced with a smaller one I had thinking that eye on the end might be bad, no such luck. I am sure it is something because this thing has been flawless for years. Somebody else mentioned pushing on the brushes, I saw the cover so guess that is what I will try first. Don't know what you are talking about for the stone but will try and find someone who does. Don,t use it much but have started a large metal building and really need it now. Thanks for the reply and I will return with results tomorrow night.

Agreed - my Lincoln was acting up and I called them for tech help. You could not have asked for more patient and thoughtful help, I followed their process and found the problem in minutes (bad diode). Can"t say enough good about Lincoln phone help
