Well, today is going to reach into the low 70's, and I think I am going to try to primer a whole bunch of stuff!

I use the VanSickle brand stuff from Big R and have been really happy with it. I was wondering though, I have some of the hardener that you mix in with the paint and then let it sit a little bit before painting, should I throw a dash of that stuff in with the primer? I'll probably use close to a quart today, I have:

A small Rim
2x 10x24 rims
2x Ferguson Centers for the above rims
5 or 6 steel pan seats for the neighbor
and a few other little things....

Just wondering what you guys thought of the idea... Bryce

If you"re using a hardener that is an isocyanate you need air supply equipment, unless you want to risk your health. Any brand of hardener should be used with the same brand of paint to be compatible. Just like using herbicides, read and follow label directions. Check the "Paint and Bodywork" board here.

I would not use hardener with the primer, and PLEASE get a breathing air system if you paint. The hardener can cause permanent lung damage.

Oh yes, I have a real respirator that I wear... I also do all of my painting out side. I just wanted to see what you guys thought of it, I actually just mixed myself up a quart of primer/thinner, and I think I am going to just shoot it as is, I read the entire can of primer and it only said how to mix it with thinner, as where the paint said how to mix it with thinner and hardener....

If you're using the hardener a respirator isn't enough. You need a system that supplies air for you to breathe. Painting inside or outside makes no difference, if you're using paint with isocyanates you still need a supplied air system.

NOOOOO, Please read this

You need a breathing air kit that forces fresh air down a hose to you.

You can wear a respirator and paint in the wind if you want. { I extremley didn't just recommend this]. You just can't breath any of the fumes. Isocyanates are made from cyanide. Very poison stuff. If it doesn't kill you it can also affect the bones and put you in a wheel chair. It can also kill you at a later date. Read what is called MSDS sheets for any paint you use. Read the application manual for the paint ;if you leave hardener in the gun beyond set-up time you will have no spraygun that works.Homemade air supply to regular respirators will also cause "bad air" to be pumped into a mask as the compressor is not designed for that. The lacquer days are over and the paint is toxic but very high quality.Notice how many guys are telling you this because they care.

Would you recommend that to a young fellow with his whole life ahead of him???

Might be OK for us on the other end.

Ok, I'll have to look at what kind of hardener it is, thanks for the concern!

Last time I talked to the guy at Big R about it, he said that it was a "new kind" and was "perfectly safe" I don't know if he was just trying to make a sale or what...

Dad is bringing me home a jug of it tonight, so I will take a few pictures and read through it and start a new post to tell you guys the facts!

Once again THANK YOU for the concern, I knew that stuff was bad, but I didn't realize it was deadly! Bryce

Bryce, Call the 800 number on the Van Sickle paint can. I have had a couple of questions in the past. I called and talked to a Dave there, He was VERY helpfull. I would give you his email address however I only got this computer today as a replacement for windows xp and haven"t found my address book yet. joe

ya, its called a SCBA, self contained breathing apparatus.
its the same thing worn in H2S situations.
