Ford model 660

Why dose this model need a pos. ground? I put in a different battery and used a neg. ground and it starts up but miss fires. Is this from using a neg.ground?

No, it will run fine positive or negative ground on the original 6V
system. It may, or may not, charge the battery, depending on
how the generator is polarized.

The miss is probably from bad/cheap or improperly adjusted points.
Plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor also possible culprits.
If it has been converted to a 12V system with an alternator it
almost has to be negative ground. There are exceptions.

They came from the factory with a positive ground 6v, I would keep it that way so as not to confuse people but that is up to you. That is how nearly all 6v setups were, positive ground.

You might be hard on the charging system if you just plopped the battery in backwards now?

But it wouldn't affect the running of it or the starter, if its missing you have other issues.

Thx for the info. The cap has been changed over to a reg. cap.
Do you know a way to check to see if the battery is getting
charged?

Measure the voltage across the battery posts when not running.
If still 6V, expect about 6.4V there.
Then start the tractor and let it run 3~5 minutes or so and check again.
It should be up around 7V when running.
