My friend kinda taught me me to weld today first time I've ever welded he said if I want to learn more with it just tell him

good to have a mentor to show you right and wrong way, welding is practice , practice, practice..........

Practice Practice Practice....Dream up projects(even silly ones),anything will improve your skills.

The first thing that Dad bought after we got electricity in 1950 was a heavy duty 1/2" drill; the 2nd thing that he bought was an arc welder. I started welding then when I was a sophmore in high school. Took more welding classes in college that I had a lot of fun with.

Is there a trade/tech college nearby where you could take some welding courses? It would open new opportunities for you if you could take some classes.

I did my last welding last year with my ICD I can't even get one so I guess it's back to forge and gas welder.
Can't even tune up and engine. Real bummer. Good thing I replaced the non working control on my HO train set.

What kind of gear are you using? I consider myself a “beginner” also, but I know enough to appreciate a good weld. If you haven’t bought a welder yet, I would recommend a flux core wire welder – even us beginners can make a decent weld with one of those. I am looking for a good stick welder - maybe a stick/tig outfit. Most of my welds have been on 1/8 to ¼ thick mild steel, and the flux core wire welder worked well for me, but now that I have repairs to DW’s tractors, I will need to get into stick welding – looking forward to this.

I have been welding almost full time for 45 years and I'm still learning. New electrodes, new processes, new problems to tackle. I guess that is why I have stayed with it so long. It is not a boring mundane job. I love to fix things that can't be fixed and have made a darn good living at it. Got a call today to go weld on a cell tower next week. Rebuilding a loader bucket tomarrow and who knows what Wednesday.

Do you have a body shop nearby? I got a couple wrinkled hoods a dozen or so years ago. Had not done any sheet work in about 25 years and was getting ready to do a quarter panel on wife's '70 Gutless.

That is something I still need to do. When the guy that I used to go to told me that I needed to get my own around twenty years ago I picked up a Lincoln "tombstone" from beside the road. It came with an instruction book which I haven't gotten around to looking at yet, though I've done a lot of repairing and fabricating.

If you're serious about learning to weld take some classes at a community college.
It's best to learn oxy-acetylene welding first. Become proficient with a torch and the other processes will be easier to master.
