What could I plant w/grass seed that the dogs won't run into mud ??? I live in the suburbs &obviously don't know much about what would mix and could be maintained like grass??? Any help??

Are you looking for a 'cover crop' to plant with your grass seed to protect the ground until the little weak grass sprouts come up,and establish?

Here on the farm we would plant oats. About a bushel an acre, or a tad more.

The oats grows like a fast growing grass, it can be mowed and will regrow for a while, it has very wide leaves compared to a lawn, it will winter kill and not bother you next year. Typically it gets ripe by August if you would let it go to seed.

I don't know if that is correct or not, but since I have a bin full of the stuff here it is how I would do it.

There are some annual rye grass (not cereal grain rye!) that could work and looks more like a fine grass, will die off in a year. Many grass seed mixes include a large amount of this, makes the lawn look good the first year, but this all dies the first winter, and the other slow permenant lawn seed takes over. This is likely what you are looking for, if you are looking for a cover crop to help out the new seedlings?

For a small yard that I could not keep animals out of or off of, I would just buy some sod--it wouldn"t be that expensive for a small area and it could be usable within a few days.

Of course you would need to do the proper prep of the ground as recommended by the sod dealer. This might vary widely depending on where you are. Good luck, and I hope your dogs are not diggers!

Nothing is going to last under heavy traffic in a path like dogs like to run on. They will wear out just about any grass I know of.

Anything you sow will have to be allowed to grow without any traffic until it is established. This pretty well means the first several months.

One of our dogs likes to chase the cars out the driveway. He has a path worn into the standing alfalfa field.

Here in Colorado,we plant a special kind of 'grass'. Its called marajuna. The dogs trample it,too. But after a couple of puffs,we dont care! LOL

Kids are the same way, but not nearly as damaging as dogs. You can have a nice lawn, or you can have happy kids and dogs, but you can't have both. A poor lawn doesn't bother me anymore.

It help some to keep the "animals" off the lawn in early spring until the grass gets established again.
