ok after 8 hours of searching and finding nothing im going to try you all, im into the transmission on the 1957 4400 chevy truck, what i need is the first- second shift fork, its bent or tweeked some way, it has unusual wear on one side. the truck will not stay in second gear unless its held, and held hard, somebody in the distant pass must have slam shifted it into 2nd out of 1st, i cant find any, is anybody here parting out a old tranny? this one has no tag, but it has a casting number of 951953, its a heavy duty 4 speed with the emergency brake on the back of it, as near as i can tell as the numbers are very worn, the number of the shift fork itself is 591 393, but im not 100% on it, just best guess, it runs with the 3rd- 4th shift fork 591 485 help???
was going to add a pic but it wont load, right now im at 90% done of a complete refurbishment to factory original

Where are you located? There is a truck salvage/rebuilder yard in Watseka, Il. that may be able to help you. If you are interested I can post more information. Armand

That was common on those transmissions. Drivers use to hold them in 2nd gear with their leg going up steep hills around here. Find you an old junk yard or go to the 'Stovebolt' website for help.

Probably a SM420. Does it have a bulge on the side and the lower bell bolts thread into the case from inside the bell? If so, it is probably a 420. I have one I would part with.

I don't know when they started using synchros but I had a 4 speed Borg warner that did the same thing. the synchro was bad - just a thought.

this one is a medium duty truck tranny 1st is unsyncroed, just 2-3-4 have them, the guts inside look almost new, and they should, this old truck has 38,000 original miles,1 owner, the same owner now, since new. it was parked when pickups got powerfull enough in the 60's to pull a decent trailer, and it just wasnt needed anymore, it held 6 adult head of cattle, with a trailer, they could cram 10 to 12 in, depending on the cows weight, and go faster , this old truck has a top speed between 45 to 50 mph

definatly a 420, tell me about yours and where your at, im in nm, so would have to come and get it, freight on this thing would be outrageous, we may be too far apart too

Is this trans made with the forks on the top cover? Did the detent keep the fork shaft tight in position? Is the fork tight on the shaft? When assembled, does the mainshft have end play more than .005? Is the second gear tight on the mainshaft? Are the engagement teeth on the gear and synchronizer worn compared to the gears it does not jump out of ? These are a few things to look at also. Mark
