While fixing a small garden spot today I was using a JD 2040 I inherited from my father. I grew up on this tractor. It was not the first one I drove. So here is my Question: what was the first tractor You drove and the first you owned and what if any you inherited and do you still have it.

The first I drove was a JD 1010
The first I owned was an Oliver 1650
inherited. JD 2040 and I still own it.

There have been a lot of tractors. First drove IH W-30, First owned IH B-275. My grandfather and I bought these tractors from the same dealer 27 years apart. First tractor I ever drove? Don't know what it was it was green and diesel and sometime between '62 and '65. We had been living in the Chicago suburbs and one summer we went to visit my Dad's aunt who married a farmer out west of Lincoln Nebraska. Uncle Hank decided I needed to learn how to drive a tractor, scared the heck out of my mom. First I owned was a Farmall H, it was the first tractor Mom & Dad bought after getting their own farm, when they up-sized to a Super M and a John Deere A I bought the H from them. Didn't inherit a tractor, dad sold out everything long before he died. Traded the H off to a neighbor as part of our plan to wean him off of John Deere tractors (it worked). Now I make do with two early Cub Cadets and a Wheel Horse 525.

Well....

The first tractor I ever drove was our Yanmar F-18D (either that or a JD 640 G skidder, can't remember??)

The first tractor I owned was my 1949 Farmall C

And the first one I inherited was my neighbors Ferguson TO-30, 1954. I never knew either of my grandpas, and he was kind of like one to me. I was more upset when he passed away than his own kids were.... So, so sad..... Bryce

First I drove was an Allis Chalmers serial number CA5021. Never inherited any. First I owned was a MM U. It came with and was power for a Belsaw sawmill I bought. I no longer have that tractor or the sawmill.

1st tractor I drove 1940 farmall A,grandfather bought new I inherited this tractor in 1994 after Dad passed away

1st drove: I'm guessing an 8N, probably about 10 years old, helping neighbors dad clear land for his son to build a house, dragging brush to the burn pile.

1st inherited/owned:'59 Ferguson TO35, co-owned by 3 of us. We share expenses for upkeep, use it as needed. Belonged to a mutual friend, he couldn't keep it running, told us just do as we please with it. He ended up getting killed on his motorcycle, his widow said we could have it. Just finished restoration last fall.

First tractor I ever drove, back in the early 50s, was my father's 8N (a '48, I think). First tractor I owned is a '52 8N inherited from my father. First tractor I bought is a JD 1020. Still have both.

The first tractor I drove was Dad's Farmall A. I inherited it, along with his F12, and several Allis Chalmers Model M crawlers. I still have them. Stan

First one I drove was a B Allis, second one was a 30 Massey Harris, Dad traded the Allis on the Massey in 1954. I still have the 30 Massey and still use it, I"m not kidding, it must have 25,000 hours on it. Ever see a tractor wear the splines clean off the clutch shaft?? She"s been rebuilt many times, I didn"t inherit it but bought it from him when they moved to town. The first tractor I owned was a Oliver 770, late one with square fenders, sold it to my cousin, he talked me out of it. wish I still had it.

2010 JD, not an intentional drive, but I did take 'er for a few feet. Real hours in the seat, '64 ford 4000 s-o-s.

Spent a little time on my fathers old D7 too, paid to have it hauled home from where it sat since '78 or '79, a friend of his had borrowed it, never came back, so I went looked for it, found it, and took it back, still have it and one other about 1000 serial numbers apart.

1st drove 1952 8N ford that my grandfather bought new, pulling hay loader behind wagon, Uncle still has it.
1st JD I drove was a 1937 B, pulling wagons for sheaves, that belonged to my future wifes father.

John deere 420c crawler

First driven- 8N Ford that my dad had on the dairy. Only tractor he ever owned. I didn't inherit it.

First owned- a different 8N. We hired our hay done the first year at the farm we bought in '72- the guy just left his 8N and mower at our place, for about a month. He finally came over, and offered them to me for $900. Looking back, I wouldn't be surprised if he left them at my place because the bank was looking for them. Ironically, I sold that tractor to a guy who had bought part of the place I grew up on, and he is still using it. He put a one arm loader on it.

City kid, never raised around machinery; but as a youngster all the neighborhood kids would play at the Colombia Movie Studios Back-lot (about 80 acres) which was about a 1/2 mile from home. One weekend a couple of friends & I "found" a small Bulldozer (about the size of a D-3) that the Studios had been using to build a pond. I climbed up on it and began playing with the controls, - OOPS! IT STARTED! Now what do I do, I'm only 10 years old & I've never operated a piece of machinery before in my life. Well, I learned REAL QUICK. Drove it around some, pushed over some dirt piles. Couldn't figure out how to turn it off, so I nosed it into a big dirt pile, took it out of gear, climbed off and just left it running. LOL!
Many years later I saw that same pond used in some of the old Tarzan movies.

Have operated a lot of different Tractors & Dozers since then, as an adult.

First Tractor bought: 1975 Yanmar Diesel MFWD, next was a 1951 CAT D-2 5U Bulldozer

Never inherited any machinery - Father was an Insurance Company Executive.

How can you wear splines? They aren't supposed to be a wear part, LOL.

(quoted from post at 22:52:19 04/05/14) first one i drove was a case backhoe that i rented. the guy said he would deliver it at 10: am, i got there early to try to get some pointers, when i got there the tractor was there and the guy was gone, so i started it up and played with the knobs for awhile til i got an idea what did what, then drove it on back to my property. never inherited nothing.
bought a 9n first.

When I had my dump truck and hired out by the day I would be told to go here or there and pick up a load of whatever. There might be a loader with operator or there may be just a machine, I never knew. It might be a Cat 416 or 992A or a small excavator or a large one. One time I had to call for help because the fellow I was working for sent me to a friend's place to get a load. I got there and there was no one around but there was Volvo loader that should have had a four yard bucket on it, but instead the one yard was on it. I couldn't get the release to work so I finally had to call the owner of the loader or help. He told me I just had to hold the button longer.

First tractor I drove was a 1945 H farmall in the mid 1950's. My dad and grand dad's tractor . Now I own it .Still runs good and I turned it back red about 4 years ago. Wouldn't trade it for a new one. Tommy

First tractor I drove: Case VAC.

First tractor owned: 1946 Farmall M. Still have it, still work it and still love it.

First tractor I drove: John Deere 3010 Gas
First Tractor owned: Oliver 880 Diesel
Did not inherit any tractors, but had my grandfathers 1951 Case SC given to me for helping my Uncle with his farm. Also have my wife"s grandfather"s tractor, a 1941 Farmall B Each of these tractors were bought new by the grandfathers.

First drove I think was a SC Case, or it may have been a DC. I do remember I wasn't old enough to pull the clutch once it snapped over, so I drove it by leaning against the clutch lever. Dad would be in jail now days.
First I owned was a Big 400 Case diesel
Only inherited or stolen from the family is a 54 DC Case that is used regularly.

First tractor I drove was an 8N Ford. First tractor I bought was 27 D John Deere. Bought it when I was in 5th grade in 64. Still have it.

First I drove, S-88 Oliver. First I owned 1955 4WD Oliver. Inherited a JD 420 from my mother-in-law.

I couldn't reach the clutch pedal on the S-88 without sliding forward in the seat. Only way I could jam the brakes on hard enough to stop the tractor baler and wagon was grip the steering wheels with both hands for leverage!

Mine was a 1950 Farmall Super A. Ornery old critter with a 6v electrical system. If the weatherman even mentioned rain it would"nt crank.
Dad 12 volted it when I was about 15, made a great big difference.
Pulled many loads of green tobacco to the barn with it. Dad sold it when I was in college in early 70"s. Never wanted to buy and restore one.. got enough of them back in the day.
Maybe that"s why I"m a Ford man.

First one I drove was Dads Farmall H. My first tractor was a Farmall B. Grandad farmed for 40 years, never owned a tractor, sold out in '53. Dad farmed for 60 years, his last one was a Farmall 1256, He sold out in 1980. I farmed for 25 years, last was a 4240 JD. I will not Inherit a tractor. I have one tractor left, a 454/2400 IHC hydro....James

First tractor I drove was a Massey 85 diesel
First tractor I bought was a Ferguson to-35
I inherited a 1941 john Deere B and a early John Deere 40 utility tractor from my dad

First drove oliver 70. First owned john deere B. Did not inherit, will not inherit they all got sold in 1998. Sad to see all the equipment you helped your Dad with leave the farm in one day. Nice oliver 1655 is what I would have bought at the sale. Too soon old, too late smart.

First one I ever drove was my Dad's Farmall B. I'm left handed, so I loved that tractor.

First one bought and paid for with my own money is my Farmall H.

Inheritance is still a ways down the road. But Dad has made it clear that when he goes, the Ford 9N and 2600 are mine.

The first tractor I drove was a well used Cockshutt 30. My grandfather bought it new and my dad got it from him. My brother inherited it when he bought the farm. The first tractor I owned was the Cockshutt 30 that belonged to my neighbour growing up. It is long gone now, traded for an Allis D14. I guess I never inherited a tractor but my youngest son will inherit my JD 2130 when the time comes. We both really like that one.

First tractor driven, Grandfathers 1952 Ferguson 2085 bought new.

Inherited, the same. Still have it.

First bought, 1960 MF 35, second bought, 1953 MH 33.

My first tractor was a John Deere, MT,plowed lots
of gardens with it. Then a Case C, then Case DC,
Then Case L.

First tractor owned was a John Deere 720 gas and bought John Deere 50 in 2005 from my mother. The 50 was the first tractor I drove in probably 1959. Brings back a lot of good memories.
