Heading west with my Daughter and kids to their new home in Clovis,California with a stop in Colorado Springs to visit a nephew.
She has a 2001 Ford Excursion with 250K miles on it but well taken care of and pulling a 3 horse trailer with household stuff in...no horses.
Trying to find the easiest pull up the Rocky's so we don't overdo the Ford.
Thanks for any help.

If you want the easiest way, either go south on 25 to Interestate 40 then west, or go north on 25 to Cheyenne then west on Interstate 80.

If you take Interstate 70 west of Denver, you will soon find out just how good that Ford is.

Don't forget the Sierras. If you take the northern route (I-80), you'll have to go over Donner pass. The easiest will be I-25 south to I-40, but that still takes you over Raton pass and a few other steep pulls.

Larry if you have never been out that way with something like that it may be the down side you need to be thinking about. Those long steep slopes require braking skill with trailers. Not unusual to see jackknife rigs. Check you brakes before you start.

there isn't any ez crossings. I've ran them all!
the interstates have improved them but most have more then 1/2 dozen passes to climb and fall off the other side. use to haul mail and meet a relay driver in rock springs wy. he came from Winnemucca NV. he crossed 6 passes each way! I only had 2.

Raton is a pull, but not real terrible. I would go south before I would go north, and I-70 west isn't for a rookie, nor a vehicle that might have issues.

I wouldn't go through Colorado at all. Drop down south as quick as you can to I40, then over to CA until you find a cutoff road that will take you over to Bakersfield and go north to Fresno.

Enjoy the trip.

Chicago, IL to Colorado Springs, CO - I-80W
- 1073 miles - approx. 16 hours

Colorado Springs, CO to Bakersfield, CA - I-25S & I-40W - 1178 miles - approx. 18 hours

Bakersfield, CA to Fresno, CA - CA-99N - 109 miles - 2 hours

I agree with heading south early. Why make the climb clear up to Denver?
I'd go to Springfield, follow I72 and US36 (avoid St Louis) to I35, take that to Witchita, US54 to Tucumcari NM. 2,217 miles, est 34 hour drive time in current traffic (8PM central). Never been across 54 but an uncle runs it with the semi when he goes to AZ or CA.
