Hi guys, I live at the top of the I -75 right at the Michigan Sault border . In fact I live in Sault Ste Marie Ont. The farms are East of the Sault and are mixed crop and stock . The Mennonites have moved here from southern ont. and are reworking those old fields. The farms very from 40 - 160 acres cleared . I still cannot post pics. on this stupid laptop but if you plan on coming up, call me or email [email protected] cell # 705 975 2803

I wish'em luck. I've been down to the south of the Soo in the U.P. in August and have seen water standing right in the dead furrows. I don't know how it is on the other side of the locks.

I go thru your area to fish at 100 miles Nord of the village of Pickle Lake. PL is the farthest north you can drive in Ontario on a paved road.
The fishing is crazy up there.....1200 miles one way. I have been to 49 states and many provinces in Canada---that drive from the SOO to WAWA is as nice as any I have ever seen and I have seen a lot of great scenic views.............

ya I sold my case 580 B backhoe to a guy just south of me in Mich. he was gong to dig drainage ditches because the land is very flat with no run-off. We have both here, clay based good for corn and spuds and sandy loan that drains well . Your right, Pickel Lake is the end of the road with plenty of good fishing .

Give me a call when your around and I will show you my old iron . It is too bad that we all live so far apart or we could have a rally .

I drive through the soo from Illinois all the time on my way to Timmins On. There is a settlement of Amish at Thessalon, On. I go to Cochrane, On northeast of Timmins. There are cattle and hay farms north of Cochrane on Detour Lake Rd.Was in grocery store in Cochrane and seen lots of hay for sale on bulliten board. One year I drove from Fort Erie to Cochrane just north of New Liskerd there was a big valley full of dairy farms looked just like Clark co. Wis. in the 1970's we always swim in Lke Michigan 20miles west of Mac bridge off Hwy2 on our way back home to Illinois

You"re close enough that we can almost claim you as another Michigan YTer.

That"s a nice area where you are at.

Rick

(quoted from post at 20:08:25 04/01/14) I've driven past your farm 35 times.

Actually 37 times come to think of it.
Been into the JD/Kubota dealer a time or two just to look around.
I don't know what kind of heat units and frost free days there would be within sight of the lake. Then again Lake Superior is colder than some people's refrigerators.
The soil is it clay , sand on top of clay, sand/gravel or what? In that little strip between the lake and the rock?

That big valley full of dairy farms is where I live. It's only about an 8 hour drive from where black is. We grow wheat, oats, barley and canola all the time and in the last few years people have been growing soybeans and early season corn as well. The soil here is a clay mixed with loam in most places and there is a lot of black muck as well. The soil varies quickly, some times within a field. We officially have 2300 heat units, but in reality it varies from 1800 to 2600 depending on the year. I really don't know how it compares to where black lives, I haven't been through there for about 30 years.
