Mechanic for a John Deere 70 diesel-90 mi radis of Ia. City

I have a John Deere 70 diesel that I would like to get running. We farmed with it for years and put it away a number of years ago. When we quit running it, it was sending diesel/oil out of the muffler. I just have to many irons in the fire right now and wondered if there was anyone in Eastern/South East/Southern/ North East/ Central Iowa that works on the old John Deere diesels. Not needing it restored - just running well. Thanks.

Try the JD section of this site.
Odds are somebody took the stat out or it's stuck open. Replace with a 195F.
The injectors are probably cracking at too low of pressure. Remove and have the springs dialed in after having new tips installed.
Use straight weight 40 or 50 motor oil.
Does it wet stack when worked or just when putting around?

This old tractor was one of our main tillage tractors back in the late 50's to mid 60's. It even had a New Idea picker/sheller on it during those years. Then it became a chore type tractor running augers/spreaders/etc. The old girl never gave up. You just couldn't stand to run her unless you wanted to be coated in oil. The tractor was never opened up for repairs. I think the clutch needed work too. It probably needs to be torn down and rebuilt. It worked side by side with a Farmall 450 diesel.

Not real sure of the name of the business but I believe the guy goes by Larry"s repair or something like that at Tipton Iowa.

He has been at it for years.

Nothing $ 10,000 to $ 15,000 or more shouldn't cure.
I'd bet it's like most and really worn out.

Andy..I've worked on a lot of 70 diesels and when they have "diesel slobber" like yours it's usually worn cylinder bores and worn piston rings.
You can put a hotter t-stat in them and take them out and work them hard and it will clear up temporarily, but let them idle again for 10 minutes and it's right back. Should be easy to get it running again but the original problem will still be there. If it has sentimental value you should plan to have it overhauled and keep it. Price the parts and machine shop costs before you start the project.

There's a guy by the name of Bill Zegers in Newton Ia that used to own a JD dealership in Newton. He'd know what to do for it. Sounds like it's time for an overhaul from your description though.
