Overheating 8N

My 8N overheated and there was no thermostat. I've ran it for a few years without knowing. I bought a new one, but have questions. If it was cooling properly without the thermostat, could it be the water pump? Can the water pump go bad without it leaking? When it overheated, anti-freeze was running out of the overflow at the top of the radiator. Thanks.

Need more info.was it a hotter than normal day?were you working it harder than usual?Without a tstat, water will circulate fast.So fast that it wont cool as it passes through the radiator.Tstat slows the water, helping to cool.

Are you sure you arent over filling as the coolant does expand when warm and it will run out of the oeverflow if its running hot it will boil and steam your problem is oprobably overfill. You didnt say anything about temp when it overflowed how long does it overflow cause if its overheating it will steam bad for a while even after engine has stopped. You arent the first to overfill then wonder why it runs out the overflow.

I've used the tractor for grading the drive and removing snow for 4 years. It wasn't overfilled and unfortunately I don't have a temp gauge. The outside temp was around 50 and the engine had ran for about 15 minutes before I noticed the anti-freeze running out. I've ran it during winter and summer and never had it do this. I assumed it was the thermostat until I realized it didn't have one.

I installed the thermostat and started it. I ran it and drove it for about 30 minutes and everything seems fine. When I parked it and shut it off, there was some overflow from the top of the radiator. Not much and it stopped after a couple of minutes. The thermostat is installed with the pointed end towards the radiator.

I thought the pointed end goes towards the engine too be able to sense the temp correctly.. are you sure you got it right?

And exactly when was it throwing coolant? Was the engine sitting and idling or were you putting it under load? Every time I have had them do that it was a head gasket. It isn't heating up and boilin over, combustion gasses are pushing it out. Put a tester on the rad or compression test.

Haven't seen an 8n thermostat, but the spring side goes toward the engine (I think that is what you are describing). I will second slightly over full. Especially if you you are shutting it off after working hard without letting it cool down for a couple of minutes.
