I traded in my motorcycle and Honda Quad for a 610 XC Mule. I was thinking the 610 was the engine size, Its not, its just a number they put on the body I guess. And its my own fault for not checking deeper. My BIL has a 610 Gator and I was led to believe they were the same. I have a good sized hill near by and his Gator will go up it and maintain speed, Mine slows down a lot. I dont mind the 25 MPH but if I am going to haul anything in mine I wont be able to make the hill unless i go to low, and thats about a good walk for speed. Is there anything I can do to be able to use this thing? Thanks for reading

Nope, it is what it is. It will go through just about anything but speed defiantly isn't its strong point. Plus I think it's governed if you get up to speed with it anyway, maybe you could look into that?

"Mule" is exactly what the name says......a worker. If you want to hot rod around in the woods stirring up dust & slinging mud, then you didn't do your homework before you bought! Sorry!

I have a 4010 trans mule. I sped it up a little by going to taller tires. It has efi, so there is no playing with the carb linkage to get a few more rpms out of it. Although it is slow, I have never felt like it needed any more power. It is just as fast loaded as unloaded. That being said, bil just bought a honda bid red. It has a 3 speed auto transmission. We haven't used it much yet, but I am very impressed with it so far.

I have a Yamaha side by side with the small engine, it never runs out of power in low or high gear. Wil climb the side of a tree if you can keep it from falling backwards. I like the push button 4 wheel drive and differential locks. It plenty helpful around the farm for all kinds of things including interlining the kids, they love to drive it around the farm.

I have a mule, and have had it for about five years now. Darn thing goes anywhere, and does more than it was designed to do, with little maintenance. Follow the book for maintenance- there are a few things you do have to do occasionally. But we use it for fencing, seeding, spraying and general transport all over the farm, and it's only been a few times we have stuck it anywhere, although I do have to admit it doesn't like deeper snow. It has hauled deer out of the woods, gone through streams and manure with equal adaptability. It is a bit underpowered, but, then again, it is just a single cylinder motor, but it is gutsy and economical for what we use it for.

I have a 2012 4010 mule. Neighbor just bought a 610 mule. Some of the differences. 610 is single cylinder, air cooled, carb, solid axle in rear, smaller bed, lighter frame construction, taller skinner, knobby tires, smaller gas tank.

4010 is a 2 cylinder, fuel injection, water cooled, power steering( sweet), 4 wheel independent, stronger frame, smaller, wider, more like turf/knobby tire for a smoother ride.

When I got my 4010 mule it was end of year, discounted price, which wasn't a $1000 more than neighbor paid for his new 610.

If I were you, to save drive belt, use low range under load. The owner's manual says never use 4 wheel on hard surfaces. Also when you go from 4 wheel to 2 wheel, it sometimes hangs up. This too in in the manual. So, I put it in reverse when I go from 4 to 2 and it works just fine.

Enjoy.

thanks for all the responses, but going slow wasnt the problem, And I did say it was my fault for not checking into it more instead of taking the salesmans word for it. But it acts like it could run out of power going up the hill. I had a Honda 300 quad that would go up the same hill without slowing down with a trailer load of wood behind it. It sure isnt anything like the Gator 610. Thanks again, I guess I am stuck with an underpowered ride.

The only issue I have with the 4010 is traction on a very steep incline covered with snow and frozen ground or ice under snow. Mine can handle the steepest incline I can make with a backhoe and not flip the hoe over as long as there is no snow. I think you will be surprised that low range will do.

My sister has a gator. It a 2x4 with rear lock out. Both mules have rear lock out.

We had two they were both trouble free, and like you said wouldn't carry much a load up a steep hill fast, but low should be kinda fast, sure its 15mph or so at least I think mine was, now have a 800 Polaris ranger that is wild, will haul about anything any speed, does right at 60 and goes down 30 inch rows just like our tractors like it a lot.

Put a snorkel on that Big Red. They tend to pull in a lot of dirt from underneath and clog the filter, the one I know of in this area needed its filter cleaned daily in summer. They've been known to pull dirt through the filter and ruin the motor too.

They replaced it with the Frontier last summer. One of the changes was drawing air from up behind the seats instead of from underneath somewhere.

That Big Red was traded off on a JD last fall.

Thanks for the advice on the big red. I haven't really had a chance to look it over good since he bought it. I will have it out to the farm soon and take a look at it.

As was pointed out, I did not do my homework, I wanted to trade my Motorcycle in and the Gator dealer didnt want to take it in on trade. If I didnt trade it in I probably would have rode it more and I am getting to old to ride. And I shouldnt have trusted the dealer, they are out to sell Mules.
