An addiction?

I bought my first tractor at 16. I turned 25 last week. I just realized that I have bought my 12th tractor this week. I have owned Oliver models 550, 770, 1550, 1650, 1655, 1750. 2 John Deere B's and a 60. A case 1070, Ford Tw-10, and International 1066. Unfortunately I have sold the 1655 and 1750 and the ford will be leaving me as part of the deal for the 1066. Is this normal or do I have a problem? My friends call this a sickness since I don't even farm full time.

sounds perfectly normal to me. i only have 3 but i know i would have more than 20 if i had the money even though we only have 8 acres that are workable. hey, what the heck, it keeps us off the streets, right :)

It seems normal to me, I am getting quite a collection myself and I don't even farm!!,....Whenever my wife grumbles about me buying another or spending too much time playing around with them I just tell her that there are worse things I could be doing.

I bought my first right after my 13th birthday, I will be 16 in June, and I already have 12!! I like all colors of tractors, and that's what I have. I have never farmed any property of my own before, but I someday will, I think you have a ways to go before it is called and addiction! Bryce

James just bought our 16th tractor, a JD 40S we named "Audie". 15 JDs and one Ford 2810. We give the JDs names so we know which one we're talking about.

Dirtpusher:

Don't feel too bad; I don't farm at all, not even a garden (all I can grow is ROCKS, & OLDER). I'm a Miner and yet I have 4 tractors - a 1978 Yanmar Diesel MFWD with FEL & Box Scraper; a 1957 Le Roi Centaur Tractair with Rock Drill; a 1951 Caterpillar D-2 5U Bulldozer; and a 1937 Allis Chalmers 'M' Farm Crawler (Project Tractor) .

I'm up to 3 "raking" tractors even though I only have 1 rake. Between those and the other 3 I actually use on my big 50 acre farm, I'm thinking about building a pole barn for storage instead of remodeling our kitchen. I don't think you have a problem, but my wife would argue with both of us.

Yes, but Allen has it really kept you off the streets?? LOL I think iron collecting could be the solution to a lot of society problems. Migraine

Yep,its an addiction.Just ask anyone who knows me.I currently own about 17 tractors.I've bought/sold at least that many more....Good thing I dont have any 'money'(old tractors keep you broke!),my whole farm would be covered in 'iron'. LOL. You are in good company! Relax.....

Yes you are a sick person!!!!! If any of us were in our right mind we probably wouldn't own any due to the cost of fixing them up. However being partially insane I have to admit to owning 7 for a hobby farm of 15 acres. Probably will own more before I'm done. I told my wife my goal is to have one for each implement so I don't have to spend time hitching up equipment. I think she gave up on me as we have been married for 37 years. I think the only cure is to keep buying them.

Well, ya know, one thing just leads to another!

When we bought our place in Dallas in 91, we needed a tractor to maintain it. My dad had died 2 yrs earlier and his 1948 JD A was still in Indiana.

About a yr later (92 I think), we hooked up James' 16 ft trailer to his 1965 Chevy heavy half 1/2 ton p/u and headed north on a Friday over a July 4th weekend.

Visited with my grandfather on Saturday. Loaded the tractor on Sunday morning and headed south. 22 hrs later we pulled in the drive at our place in Dallas.

That 48 A, named "old John" got us started on old JDs. Next tractor we bought was a 1952 A, then "Big John" our 1955 70 diesel. After that, I've lost track of the order of purchase for the others.

We now have:

4 70's - "Big John", "1011", "15" and "Vernon";
3 A's - "Old John", "Easy" & "52";
2 B's - "John B" and "Uncle Earl";
1 M - "Sparky";
3 MT's - "Sam", "Rusty" & "Mac";
1 40T - "BW";
1 40S - "Audie", the latest addition

James - did I miss a tractor?

Bought this tractor in Farmersville, TX from an implement dealership located on Audie Murphy Parkway.

Nancy, I can't keep the G-kids names straight- how in the heil can ya keep tractor names straight????

Hi My Name is Robert I have a problem I am. Oh hang on thats another addiction help introduction!
At 12 tractors you are probably borderline. At least you can list all you have here. I have around 20 odd fordsons here and have to go write down whats here if anybody asks what I got, after a buying spree.
I collect tractors and construction toys as well don"t even know how many I got there.

I don"t drink or smoke anything , I know where every cent of my leisure fund is. I can see it when I go out in the yard or in the basement.
How many of your friends can say the same, after a night in town at the bar or something.

If your happy don"t worry about the rest. I talked to a guy got over 100 tractors, trucks and cars.
I think he might be beyond help.
Regards Robert

I think you have a ways to go before you are addicted...heck, I have at least 85 of them sitting around here on 13 acres..and I feel just fine :lol:

I have 26 Olivers, a JD 950 and a Cat skid steer, at 71 I'm just getting started....you got a good future ahead of you!

If it's addiction I don't want to kick the habit. 11 1/2 acres with 4 tactors.
MF 230
1967 Ford 3000 that I made a push blade for the front
1953 ford Jubilee
1953/1957 Jub/640 depending on which end your talking about with a FEL

Think we all are little sick? Do have addiction for tractors and equipment myself. Tractor therapy works wonders for me since I was a young buck. Since your trading them and hopefully coming out ahead.
Keep up the good work!!

I did not have any tractors until I started reading this site. Now I have 6. 674 international, super c, and some fords.

I have 19 tractors. 15 John Deere, 4 Ds, 1 GP, 2 Bs, 1 LA, 1 H, 2 50s, 1 60, 1 70, 1 720LP, 1 730D. Two ACs 1 WC & 1 WD. Then there are the 2 CAT TWENTYs. By the way there is no cure for old iron fever, sell them all is not the answer the bug is still there.

I consider it a good weight loss program. Every time I buy a tractor or something related to it my billfold gets lighter. You have to look on the bright side...:) Mike

Isn't an addiction that you eat and sleep? I found the cure. Of the 20 (down from the 65 we once had) or so tractors outside and the 150 plus toys and pedal tractors inside. I can say I am not addicted. I don't have a single one in the bedroom. If that changes I will seek therapy

We farm 200 acers and have 14 Deere tractors,4-3020's,3-4020's,4010,4520,4230,2510,2520,2040 and a 630.I should sell some but have no idea which I would part with.We also have 6 combines a Deere 105,2-95's,55 and 2-45's.The collection also has 5 or 6 forage harvesters and that many chuck wagons as well.Wife says no more shed so I just have to pack them all a little fuller.When I die the kids will either say "Why did dad buy all this stuff" or they will say "Why didn't dad buy more of this stuff".LOL Tom

What is normal -- to each their own ! I live in an apartment and my brother owns a 40 acre non - working farm . I started collecting about 5 years ago - got the bug and just keep going. I own WD45 , WC, Super 88, Minie M5 , Minie G6 ,--sold 9N , 8N , Massey 22 , Olie 550, Case 580 ck , Case 580 B , Also have 1948 Int. KB5 , 1979 JEEP CJ7 ,
Starting to shift my interest back to old cars , like 30 era Fords be nice to trade all my stuff for a 32-33 Ford coupe daily driver.

Is it normal or do you have a problem? Yes. :)

I farm (full time), and have 5 tractors that I use. Beyond that, there is one project tractor in the garage (don't normally name tractors, but this one is 'Basketcase'), and I am now part-owner of another project tractor. Part-owner because my 9-year-old son was a couple hundred $$ short when an opportunity came up to get his first tractor. There have been something like 14 other tractors that have come and gone...traded or sold outright. Most were bought needing some work. I like the idea of 1 tractor per implement, or 1 per acre... but doubt it will ever happen for me.

Sounds like you're well on your way. WELCOME TO OUR WORLD. 2 acres, 2 Ford 800 series, 1 960 tricycle, 1 Case 441 triple range, 4 Massey Fergusons, WD Allis Chalmers, D17 Allis Chalmers 2 j.d.350 dozers, Case 580B hoe, 2 skid steers, dump truck and misc. related equipment. (some of it is at the neighbors, just not enough room at my place. Now from reading everyones threads, it looks to me like you really just need to buy more, there is no word in our vocabulary for that's enough. LOL Just my thoughts, Keith

Hoarding is a sickness.
I have 6 tractors 2 wheel loaders and a CTL + 2 lawn tractors.
Every one of them is used for farm work but the lawn tractors., some tractors are spares in case one has a mechanical problem that can't be fixed quickly in the field (mostly when haying). i have 1765 acres
When i stop farming the tractors will hit the road as well.
I have no particular love for any of them.

You know if enough of us tractor addicted people get together, it soon becomes the norm. So if we all hang here together, we are normal.

Nope sounds perfectly normal to me. And I can prove I'm normal. I made a smart ask comment to someone at VA and the next thing I knew I was talking to a shrink (the person in question thought it made me sound suicidal). Talked to the shrink 15 minutes and he said "get out of here, you are perfectly normal". So from a normal person all this tractor stuff sounds normal!

Rick

You're fine. I live in town...not a bit of farm ground.....5 Fergusons, 4 Fords, 2 Allis Chalmers, 2 Farmalls, and a 730 Case.

I had an older collector tell me "If you know how many tractors you own, you don't have enough!". I only have 7, I need a lot more. And I farm 12 acres, so I must find more room for them.

I heard this same comment from Dale Haymaker. Great guy!
He owns over 100, all Alice Chalmers. No two the same that I saw.
He has his own AC museum open to the public. Paris, IL.

It's not an addiction, it's a "hobby"! LOL
Here are a few of mine playing baseball on the 4th of July.

Addiction , disease....just words used by people who don't have any to describe their jealousy of those who do.

I'm glad to see I'm not alone. It seems like we all feel the same about our old tractors. I enjoyed all of your comments and thoughts. I probably will end up with a few more tractors in the near future.

I have even heard it called a cult. But let's think about this a little. My wife asked "How many tractors does a man need?" I say to her there is a large discrepancy between want and need. This is a very complex and intriguing question. Furthermore, how many purses, shoes or shades of lipstick does a lady need? Now don't get me wrong, I sure don't want any lady to boycott Revlon or Talbots. We just have to keep this in prospective. Her reply is always "I can read the obituary now, Memorial service at ten o'clock, free lunch served at noon and the auction will start promptly at two." She may be from the city but she knows farmers well enough that if you throw out a free lunch and a auction sale they will come out of the woodwork.

I was having a health problem about 30 yrs.ago. I went to a very well known clinic ,and after a through 3 day long exam, they sent me home with this explanation:
There is no known cure for your sickness as it is called :
Infectious Ironitis !

It has not gotten better with age either. clint
