Is there a way to stay connected to the internet without the IE browser window popping up from being minimized while working on something else that requires being online?

YES, just have several different browsers. I have 4 and there are times when I may be on 2 or 3 of them at the same time.

Yes , just do not open a browser. Internet connection does not require any browser to be open.

Assuming you are not on dial up, then your high speed modem is always connected to the Internet and always 'on'.

If your browser is turning itself on, or waking itself up from being minimized, then you have some setting or something else going on that does this; normally it should stay off or minimized until you do something to open it.
