Update: Fence row chainsaw forgotten about 13 years ago.

I had posted about a Sthil 038AV chainsaw that I had found in a fence-row that I had forgotten about. It sat for 12 to 13 years out in the weather.

Chain and bar were no good, obiuvisouly. Rings were seized, piston locked. I freed the piston and took apart the cylinder assembly. Cylinder was pitted (8 pits). Local Sthil dealer wanted $24.900 for each piston ring times 2 rings.= $48.00

Points were shot. Bought new points. It takes a special tool NLA from Sthil to set points since they are inside the flywheel. I wound up buying another flywheel to cut it down to be able to make the NLA tool to set my points..

I bought new cylinder kit and carb for less than $100.00. Upgrade from 48mm to 52mm which made it a 038 magnum. Bolted everything up and flushed the gas tank, after a few modifications had the chainsaw running. Adjusted carb and all is good.

Get new bar and chain in the morning and I will have a "like new" chainsaw.

Not too bad for a Sthil I had forgotten about and it sat out in the weather extremes for 12 to 13 years!

PS- Tried to post pic of saw but camera cable is wore out and not making a connection...Maybe later.

I found a pair of fencing pliers, and also a wire stretcher another time while out fencing. Found both by dropping my stretcher to the ground and heard metal hit metal. Both pieces where under the grass, and neither lost by me. The pliers had to be freed up, but I use them all the time. They don't make em like that anymore. Me and another guy left a chain saw wedged in a tree. When we went back to get it, someone had sawed it out and stolen it.

That's why I always carried two saws to the woods.
Things like that happen and I didn't want to leave it there while I went for another saw, especially when I was sometimes fifteen miles from the house.

I do the same I take three saws with me. I also take the nylon wedges along with two cutting axes and one splitting axe. When I am done I always double check to see I have every thing before leaving woods.

Good job you had antifreeze in it, or it might have been cracked????? LOL.........You obviously have too much money? If I had left my chainsaw, then I would have had noticed as I only have one!!!!!!!....LOL........Sam

I'm glad the saw is running. Now just make sure you don't leave it for 15 years on a concrete floor, you won't be able to save it if you do! I've had several people bring me old saws that had set on concrete and had the magnesium/aluminum parts corroded beyond repair. One was a really nice old Mcculloch that was near pristine on top but eaten all away underneath, a real shame.

Hey, if any of you guys run across my felling lever in your travels I'd appreciate it if you let me know where I, or the boys, dropped it. It's bright orange and should stand out like a sore thumb but darned if I can find it!

One trick I used when I worked alone in the woods was to carry an extra bar an chain. that way if the bar got pinched I could still cut my way out.

Grandpa always had 2 chain saws. He would run one tank dry, start the other one, run its tank dry. His theory, and it makes sense to me, was heat was the enemy, this way the heat is somewhat dissipated.

I think that is a brilliant idea !!!!!

I would of never thought of it. Simple and effective. Unbolt stuck bar and put on another and go cut away. Made perfect sense when I read it. That's on of those "DUH" moments as in DUH why didn't I think of that.

Hey Bret I was moving some stuff around the barn this weekend
... I didn't see your bar anywhere .....I,ll keep an eye open for it
though.....nudge nudge ....wink wink....

Yeah, but be extra careful if you have to use the second bar.
Or carry three.
