Unit of measure

Did the system of measurement change?
The reason I ask is, nowdays people say the distance of football fields. And if they are asking directions they say how many hours are you away?
What is wrong vith saying so many yards or feet?
If in mileage, if they say how many hours are? I tell them depends on how fast they are driving or whether they are traveling by horse or train or river boat.
I find that people who use sports analogy to be very sicking, as "Not all people are caught up in sports.
I know that i'm in the minority and out of step vith the "New World Order"
How do others think aboot the topic?
So fur there is still freedom to chose a tractor to ones own desire.

Unfortunately there are more people nowadays that can visualize the length of a football field, but have no clue what a hundred yards looks like.

They can't add and subtract either!

If say you are going to go 100 miles, and you get caught up in traffic for 6 maybe 4 hours, how does the person on the other end know how long it will take you to get to his place?
That why I say, how many miles it is to a destination verses how long it vill take you.

I am with you on that. Have no idea how big a footbal field is and do not want to know. And for hours that tells you absoulately nothing. when you are driving 10 MPH over speed limit or 30 mile Per Hour under depending on if you are driving a race car or if you are driving an older slower truck with a trailer.

Could be a product of the internet age. Call up a map, ask for directions, it'll give the miles AND the estimated time. And they're usually pretty close if driving the speed limit and all goes well.

I'm another agreer. I don't care how many football fields long an aircraft carrier is. Or how many Olympic swimming pools of oil a tanker will carry. Or how many automobiles it takes to equal the weight of a 747. Just give me miles, gallons, and pounds. TDF

when they use that type of jargon , its almost a given// , you already know whether or not you can trust them on your place, if you can hire them, and they will complete the job and you still have money to eat , and who they v ote d for ....

I ask both miles and how long does it take to get there, may have lived under the 11 hr rule to long

It's because so many people grow up with no perspective of distance. They have never walked a mile and didn't build their own house. Because most people watch football distance is in football fields. Driving is always in time, because depending on traffic, miles may vary. Height is always in stories, about 11 ft.

Why do you have to be a *hit to Harvey? It's not hard t figure out what he's saying. If that's all you have to worry about get a life and/or a job!

Hours driving distance has been a common measure in the Mid-west for the 40+ years that I've been driving.

The only time I use yards anymore is if I pace off a rough measurement or buy cubic yards of materials. A football field is a newer measurement, but it is very easy for most people to grasp. For us old-timers it's 100 paces or 150 normal steps. Blocks is the measurement that gives me trouble, I just count intersections or watch house numbers.

My Uncle Ivan always talked distance in rods. I knew what a rod was but could never fathom the distance of say 80 rods. Worked fro him from the size of a field to the distance away a buck was. He was a neat guy.

Call me old fashioned if you like, but that's the way I grew up, measuring distance in miles.
Give me the distance in miles, and I can figure how long it will take me to get there. When my son moved to another city, I asked him how far it was. "Oh, about three and a half hours." I can hit the interstate a mile from my house and under normal conditions, drive the distance at 65mph except for the last ten miles. I don't care how many hours, just tell me how many MILES IT IS!!!

And I suppose in your little world everyone speaks impeccable English, always uses the proper fork, and "it" doesn't stink! Must be a lonley place!

Nope, they don't "talk" proper English. Im from the South! I use the same fork for my salad, as I se for my steak, or beans, or pork chops, or whatever I eat. Oh, almost forgot, it stinks just as bad as yours, and no its not a lonely place where I live.

I do however think is childish to come on to a website and complain about someone elses habits, tractors, or how people describe measurements when you do things that other people on the form find ridiculous! Just ask how many people find it annoying!

Looks like cabin fever is hitting it's stride. A lot of things are irritating. Yes, people that can't measure in common terms of feet, yards, miles, pounds, gallons etc. are a pain, so are those that think it's cute to use kilos and kilometers or Centigrade. Living on the border most of us up here can convert, but you HAVE to convert and it's a pain. So are people that use cutesy spelling, text talk or Latin.

In short, it's just that time of year, we're all miserable and everything bothers us. Why not move on to something non-controversial like taxes, politics or religion?

Our language is constantly changing. Do you use the word decade? It used to be used rarely, now people seem to have to put it into every paragraph.

The football field unit of measure the OP mentioned is because many if not most people can relate to that. Football is the most popular sport in this country. The only time I've ever heard of a football field being used as a unit of measure is on TV when they need something that people can relate to, to compare size or distance.

If you ask someone here in the midwest how far away someplace is you'll likely get the answer in time not miles. If I drive south I can travel close to 2 1/2 times the distance in an hour than if I were to drive north. To annoy those that don't like the time method even more, the travel time is often adjusted for the time of day for "rush hour".

Forget taxes, politics and religion. Lets talk about synthetic VS conventional oil, oil and fuel additives, calcium chloride in tires, Seafoam,......or the biggie.....ethanol ;)

Time is money. The only reason I would want to know the mileage is to calculate fuel consumption.

Yep it sure must of !

Go buy some clothes or shoes and every thing you get it a different size you have to try each one on for size. No more can you just go pick up the same size you always did.
