Turf Tires for Front End Only?

I have a 2wd Ford 1900 with a front-end loader. Among other uses, I pull a small manure spreader. My tractor has standard tires all around and the front tires cut a nice swath in the front yard no matter how carefully or wide I turn when spreading manure there. The wife doesn't appreciate that artwork, so I am considering getting turf tires for the front end only.

Before I do this, I thought I'd ask to see if I might be shooting myself in the foot in any regard to the utility of the tractor. I bush hog a couple of pastures and generally use the loader for all sorts of mischief around the place. Anyone see a trade-off in utility if I swap out only the front tires?

Not a problem, however You might consider wider turf tires as well. A three lug ag tire digs in to keep the front pointing the way You want it too. Helps in turning except when pulling heavier loads.

I can't see why one would need lug tires on the front of a 2WD tractor. Might check the toe-in which could affect how it tracks in turns. Good luck.

If she can tolerate manure spread in the front yard, I can't imagine why a few tire marks would be a problem.

(quoted from post at 07:00:06 03/25/14) For the record, what kind of tires are on front, now?

3-lug ag tires. Or, so I thought.

Left tire is that -

But, not the right tire!

Now, that's just funny!

I would consider matching the left 3 rib with multi-rim on right. I would think smaller divits from more and shorter ribs.

Like another said, if she's ok w/manure on frontyard...

It will work, as long as you are 2wd. You can't mix and match
with a 4wd. You will lose a little turning ability in soft stuff, JD
and snow.

A good compromise is those 4 or 5 rib tires like you have on
the one side, they will help you turn in mud yet, but they don't
dig quite as hard on a lawn.

Thanks, Paul. I'll see if I can match that tire. It was the 3-rib that was cutting the lawn pretty bad.

This is a dumb question: does it tear up the lawn more turning left compared to turning right? I suspect the three rib tire is doing 3/4 or more of the work in turns, and the left tire would have less leverage when turning left.

As others have said, replace the left tire with a smoother implement tire similar to the right tire, and use the turning brakes more. I do suspect that two tri rib tires would also tear up less turf than the mis-matched set does now.

You are my hero if you were able to convince your wife to allow you to spread manure on the front yard. I think I'd put those powers of persuation to better uses though...

Yes, exactly the case! I was making left turns. Thanks for the tips and I am off to replace the left tire.

UPDATE: I had both front tires replaced with six-rib tires. Immediately noticed a [b:e74cb445aa]big[/b:e74cb445aa] difference! These tires do not cut into the yard, but still offer enough of a grab not to slide badly when I have a loader full of manure. I like 'em!
