we need to get some walkie talkies. the last ones we got were motorola which i used to think was the best in the world. DH is hard on things and im wondering if there is a more durable, reliable, child proof hehe. set of walkie talkies that we can buy that will last us a bit longer this time.

Are you talking about walkie talkies that guys use for hunting or something used in industries?
Our fire dept. always used Motorola radios. I like them, but they are expensive. The chief is in the process of replacing the older motorola's with Kenwoods.

we have a 113 acre ranch, hilly, we need to be able to talk to each other without seeing each other and it's too far to scream.

Been using the same set of Cobra radios for 12 years. Fishing hunting, farming. Still have the same 4 rechargeable AA batteries in them. Dual charger. No problems with them. But I'm the type of guy that takes care of things as I have my 1950 Marbles sheath knife and leather scabbard.

They replaced our ten year old Motorola's last fall with Kenwood's, most of which are junk already.

Cell phones do not work well in work situations. An example is a wire pull. Stop the pull! means now not ads then apps then contact list then speed dial. By that time disaster has occured and you just skinned 8000 dollars worth of wire.

look for hro on line the icom V8 is a very good radio about 149.00 each can be programmed for MURS channels (multi user radio service )
I'm a ham radio operator and never leave home without one can also be programmed with weather also will talk about 4-5 miles unit to unit
any local ham can help a lot !

They work pretty well for us on a 5000 acre ranch in the southern Black Hills.Buy the Cobras at Walmart and if you don't like them take them back. Or Cabela's.

Take the advice from Ronnie, look at murs radios. Can buy them on ebay, but stay with the name brands - icom, kenwood, moto, etc.

CB - way too much noise and interference due to AM rather than FM. Plus you need a long antenna to work well. No good.

GMRS/FRS - that is the current Moto/cobra/etc blisterpack radios. Work well but not very durable. Line of sight that may not be good in hilly terrain. Run around 1W of power for GMRS. Most blister pack radios will not work on a repeater. You can get a used commercial class repeater and have it programmed for GMRS fequencies (Moto Desktrack for instance) and place the repeater antenna up high, then all the units can calk together. Works well but can be expensive. You need a license to run GMRS, but not for FRS.

MURS - can be programmed in a Mil-spec commercial radio that can be bought relatively cheaply. Uses VHF so a bit more capable of dealing with hills... Run 5W of power so a lot more power than GMRS. That is the best choice for point to point.
