Way O.T. Acid rain

Some years back that was the subject of all the eco-hysteria. Was that a real issue? I think that was before "Global warming and "global change". What happened?

The reduced NOx emissions in cars and the reduced SOx emissions from power plants is helping this.

China is a mess.

We still get the acid rain fall out here from US east coast coal plants. Have to dump lime in a bunch of the lakes to keep it from killing all the fish.

It has been getting better the last 20 years.

In the towns with the coal plant for generation it stained all the cars pretty regularly. Now they all have BET [back end technology] that takes the emissions and turns it into gypsom which they sell. The BET did clean up the air quite a bit. They could also now burn hard American coal trucked in. The soft coal was imported and came in on barges with a tug.

All the more reason to buy U.S. made products...our factories pollute less. AND there is much less fuel burned transporting products from the factory to the store.
Just another reason I dont' believe the 'climate change' hype...if it were that bad, the environmentalists would be screaming to boycott products from any country with lax pollution standards or enforcement, and international trade in general. (but I DO support taking care of our environment)

What doesn't pollute our air pollutes our rivers and lakes directly due to coal ash ponds breaching in WV, and now in NC and VA. Latest breaching of coal ash holding pond by Duke Energy is just upstream of where I live in VA. Seems there is no way to make coal totally safe for our environment.
As an aside, my neighbor just moved back here after being away for 20 years working as a coal miner in WV. He is very bitter over loosing his job, blaming it all on external_link. Yet he readily admits that his Mother died of emphysema, due mostly to air pollution of chemical and coal plants near Charleston, WV

Over here in Ky. They spread the coal ash on the county roads instead of salt in the winter time. Why, because it is free, why, because the power company has to pay big bucks to haul it to a EPA toxic landfill.

Yeh, I know Greg. I hear of it being used in making building blocks, etc.. but when stored in large concentrations it does concentrate mercury, arsenic and selenium, and those are some BAD chemicals.

Shipping does pollute a lot, and it is an environmental concern. A few years ago our son helped do a study about ships running their diesel generators in Long Beach harbor. Long Beach has since put in shore power for them to use when unloading.

The statement in industry is that you can "overcome pollution with dillution". We get the advantage of dillution before the china air reaches us.

We had a 4 unit coal fired power plant in Lawrenceburg, IN which is now a 2 unit power plant. Two yrs ago the EPA regs required the stack emissions be cleaner, but company officials said new scrubbers technology would cost too much,so 2 coal burn units were closed. 100 were jobs lost in process here and probably several coal miners lost their job elsewhere back east. Prevailing wind sends emissions from plant stacks to northeast states along with acid rain. They have influence over EPA thru their politicians. We're told to expect much higher electric rates in near future since less coal generated electric is available. This happened all over the U.S. So we all breathe easier now until we open the electric bill.

Yes it was real and messed up a lot of new car paint . Rain drops left to dry would etch the clearcoat. Very noticeable on darker colors. They also blame the coal plants for doing a lot of damage to the George Washington national forest

We will all breath easier when we quite burning coal! You can spend money on medical care or expensive electricity, buy some more efficient light bulbs and live healthy and inexpensive!

I have a 1906 book on Steam engine operation. It recommends to alternate using well water and rain water in the boiler. The rain water being ACIDIC will loosen the hard deposits, left by the well water.

How can that happen Ken? The weather reports always show it all moving from west to east never east to west.

Sounds like an excuse for the car companies lousy paint jobs.

I'm surprised to learn that "acid rain" has different effects depending on the color of the paint. Think about it.

(quoted from post at 10:46:09 03/24/14) David,

Doesn't china reside in the same atmosphere as we?

Meant with all the criticism I can muster.

D.

Dennis, we all know that we have one atmosphere. David made a statement that to me means that pollution is very bad in China. We all see this in the news periodically. I don't understand your post. It makes you look very bad. You are not really a bad person are you?

Years back, I made the suggestion that we put a glass dome over ALL of Washington DC to capture all of the hot air emitted from it, and pipe it into radiators in every home in the universe to provide heat. But no one took me up on it and so for now at least, we are stuck with my very good friend, fossil fuel fired power plants, God love them.

Mark

Wonder if the 17 million tons of salt spread on the roads last year plays a major role to northerner's water pollution? Some municipalities use up to 300 pounds per mile.

Hey Dan, what is to think about, dark colors show imperfections more than lighter ones. That holds true for dirt dust or acid rain spots. I was running a body and paint shop in Leesburg from 86 to 90 and we repainted a lot of new cars, and if the factory paint was BAD as you say, why was it only where the rain drops sat (think hood roof etc.) that had the spots. One woman customer worked for Regan and she went off yelling that there is NO such thing as acid rain when I told her what the spots were from. If it was bad paint jobs from Detroit they could have saved a lot of money fixing it up there instead of paying us and every other shop we knew of that was doing the same repaint jobs.

Acid rain has long been blamed for trees dying near the summit of Mt. Mitchell, NC. As far as I know, that hasn't changed. It's also blamed for damage to limestone buildings around the country.

The pH of rain would actually surprise you, theres a lot of science behind it but I believe rain falls at a pH of 5.5-6. Neutral is 7. Before we started putting scrubbers on power plants the SO2 was wreaking havoc on the rain. It was falling at 3-4 in some areas. Its not good. But as of now there are few areas that have truly bad acidic rain.

You are kidding right? A few light bulbs (with their own dangers) isn't going to allow anyone to live inexpensively and healthy. As long as we all want water pumped, air conditioning and heat, cars to drive, malls and stores to be open, lights to work at the flick of a switch and TV, computers, dishwashers and clothes driers we all need mainline power. You can't dam a river anymore, you can't burn coal, you can't pipe NG, you drill for oil, you can't put up wind mills, you can't do this, you can't do that. So where does the power come from?

"Live healthy". Reminds me of the dopes that pay $250.00 a month gym membership to run on a treadmill and then drive 1/2 mile to the store.
