Shut down computer options?

When you're done with the computer for the day, do you:

1. Do a complete shutdown
2. Put it in sleep mode
3. Hibernate it
4. Just close the lid
5. Push the power off button
6. Yank the cord out of the wall
7. Leave it on
8. Other

Work laptop - close lid and allow windows to suspend.

Home computer - turn off.

Rationale is work manages verynwell for updates and viruses. Home computer is not so well maintained.

During the day I just put it to sleep and push the power off button on the monitor.

At night when I'm finished I do a complete shut down and turn the power off at the power bar so there is no power going to the computer. Even in the off mode they still use power and my computer will sometimes turn it self on for no reason.

During the day I will put it in sleep mode. At the end of the day I will do a complete shutdown. If there is a storm approaching I will do a complete shutdown and unplug it from the wall. I had lightning strike near the house one time and it wiped out every tv,vcr and computer in the house.

I let the desktop go to sleep.

I close the lid on the laptop.

I let the tablet go to sleep.

All three, is it pretty important to shut of completely once a week or so, get rid of the accumulated gunk that gathers inside them. So do #1 every once in a while!

The iPad you have to work to actually turn it off - hold the side button a while until you see a red slider to shut down. I know I waited too long when I lose my sound, the internal conflicts build up, it needs the housecleaning of a hard shutdown.

Same for the computers.

I shut my desktop running XP Professional down completely almost every day but before I do I use CCleaner to clean the cache and sometimes defraggler and usually once a week Malwarebytes.

Scotty Just wondering why do you say that. Seldom ever do anything but shut the lid on my laptop. No problems and have had 8 running over a year?

I only have a laptop in the house that I do the same as Stephen Newell. Just hibernate during the day, and shut it down at night. When it storms, shut it down and pull the plug. I have an old pc in the shop, and just shut it down if I'm not going to be in there the next day or two.

I run a desktop computer that was custom built by a local computer retailer. The gentleman who built it said that more than half the computers come back with trouble when they use Sleep Mode. MS has tried to come out with some fixes; but just last week I thought I will try it again. Placed it in sleep mode, when the computer came out of sleep the monitor didn't recognize the computer was active again. I had to do a hard shutdown, & restart. That's not good for a computer! I never had this problem with a complete shutdown. Laptops might be different though!
