internet thought

Has anyone else thought very long about how amazing the internet is. You can find most information you want to for free, and from several different sources to compare. The most amazing part in my mind is that it is pretty much totally unregulated. Do not misunderstand there are laws in states and countries that come into effect but nothing saying you HAVE to go to a certain site or CAN'T go to another. It is freedom (mostly) at its finest. Now as with anything there are some issues, but most of them are mostly opinions on what is wrong or bad. There are some completely bad things and people end up arrested for it but nothing is perfect. When you consider the ways it has changed our lives it is truly amazing. Especially when you can buy tractor parts tax free :).

You are correct but don't for a minute think it's that way all over the world. I have family who live in South Korea. From the outside looking in things seem like here on the internet. But....it ain't the same over there. Email is monitored, not sure just how or what all they look at or for sure who "they" are for that matter.

We are fortunate in that we get to look at most everything. Let's just hope our new revelation with the control of the internet doesn't change things.

A friend told me a few years ago, (it's free now, but you just wait!) and I believe he was right. Many newspapers are limiting viewing (we pay for one) and phone numbers are hard to get for free. We made a donation to Wikipedia because I use it 3 times a day.

Yes, we are living in the digital version of the old Wild West. Can tell our grand kids some day, we lived when all that stuff was free, when it just started out.

The young generation will have fully regulated, fully taxed and fees and charges for everything, Internet....

They will sake their heads at how primitive we lived. Dial up? I remember putting the headset in the cups to make the 300 baud connection......

What amazes me is if you have a problem of any kind with a vehicle, tractor or engine it is very easy to find help on the internet. There are a lot of good utube videos on how to do things. And the no sales tax is a great big plus.

Back when it was " The Information Highway" my view was that it was more like a bad wheat crop - grains in there with a hell of a lot of chaff

It is also a great source of misinformation. Try to find the answer to a simple electrical code question and you'll struggle for hours with no good answer. Go down to the local library and you can look it up in a few minutes.

What changes will occur because our government intends to give away control of the internet (invented here) to other countries?

And just think, we have Algore PLUS this winters Global Warming to thank for all this!!!!

Yes, extremely useful and destructive - all at the same time. Seems most any new technology ruins an older one. The Internet is helping create a generation that can't write very well, can't spell, does not know what "primary" research is, and thinks a "friend" is anyone that acknowledges them on link_disallowed. Also information presented on a screen sometimes gives the illusion of authority and accuracy by appearance alone. Great tool though when used carefully.

Actually from when I first got a computer I was dumb enough to think that the info in all service manuals would be on the net for free. It is if you go on Amazon and pay money to order one. I also thought there would be so much info I would never have to buy another bike or car magazine ever again. Also not the case as I still subscribe to magazines I would like to read. As far as sales tax if you read the New Jersy[ and most other states I assume] tax codes you are still liable for taxes on out of state purchases. It's just that nobody pays them or is there to collect said taxes. It is a great distraction from getting real work done too.Right now in fact I should be sitting at my lathe making a part thats been in the chuck for days. Coffee first.

I find youtube to be one of the truly worthwhile sites. There is a wealth of knowledge on there. My wife was quoted 150 bucks at the tire shop for a serpentine belt change before driving to Fla. I watched an 8 minute youtube vid [ 2 minutes of talking]. After that I went outside and it took me 4 minutes to do the belt change. Plus machinist tips and music from just about any name you put in. I do like youtube.

I agree on the misinformation. Youtube is a good example. There are other times a regular search engine as some nights a person "wastes" a couple hours looking for something you never find...and always the thought afterwards, I could have been doing something else.

Yup. Always seems to take a maddingly long time to find the info you want. Yes, I'm old and a computer dummy. That doesn't change the fact that any info I need that is availible from non-computer sources at my disposal takes me 1/10 the time to find.

On the other hand most of the kids in my grandchildren's generation couldn't find a glass of water without a computer or I-pad.

Not really. I do however spend a lot of time pondering the truly useful inventions in the world...like sliced bread.

If I added up all the value I get out of the internet each year I'm sure it would top $10,000! I use it to search for auto, tractor and machinery parts, advertise both of my businesses for free on CL and minimal cost with a website $$$$$, finding deals on collectibles (tractors and equipment), selling said collectibles at a nice profit ....mostly via CL, but also sites like YT...it all ads up. Also all the time and $$$ saved by researching projects and then tackling them myself. Then add in all the friends made through these discussion groups.... I would be lost without it.

And just think, the disgusting garbage that is out there too. With freedom comes stuff that will make you puke. A friend of mine went on his son's web history and found out he was viewing some very disgusting 9orn on the net, his son was 11 at the time. no more unsupervised I-net for his kid.

20 years ago 9orn was a great looking woman with all the right stuff in a magazine, now it is just filth all the way around.

Yep, and all that disgusting stuff was on video tapes 20 years ago too. As long as there has been motion picture I would be willing to bet that most of it was around somewhere. With the freedom comes responsibility. I have young boys so I know I can expect them to probably try to find this stuff at some time, its my responsibility to try and head it off. About the only thing without a downside is sliced bread.

If you haven't already, try Mike Holts website. It allows question and answer forums like here. It brings together members of the electrical industry from across the nation.

Yeah but when our government spies on us and records our internet postings and site visits, it kinda sends the ole freedom theory right down the toidy, don't it?

I do all my vehicle repairs and the net has saved me a ton of money on parts and my time.
When I need parts I do the research and have the part no. when I go to the parts supplier. If not in a hurry for parts, I will buy them online.
