Saw a couple of late model or new Petes yesterday. Neither had Air horns on the cab roof. One even had six clearance lights. Maybe they are not called clearance lights.

Can you have as many lights on the cab roof as you want or is there some kind of a regulation. I used to see only five.

What do new trucks have for horns now?
 
not sure on clearance lights but believe you need 5 but you can put on more, just like tailights. but new air horns ussually if not on top are mounted underneath and alot of times are air but operated by an electric switch that runs a valve in all of the road dirt and salt. shouldnt have no problems with that. lol

We all call them clearance lights, but actually the correct term is "identification lights". The law requires a certain amount, in specific locations, but you can add as many as you want.

Air horns on the cab roof create wind resistance and drag. Not good for fuel economy. I don't know where the horns are located.
 

I read somewhere recently that the law states that above a certain GVW, probably 10,000, that the clps or ID lights whatever, are required to let drivers coming the other way at night,of the likelihood of a trailer, or body wider than the cab, behind the cab.
 

drove one of those,they have a little dinky airhorn mounted under the hood somewhere. I think that the roof mount airhorns are still an option.
 
We have two, seven year old Navastars (IH)at work that have them mounted in the right front fender. My dog barks louder. That s why drivers are adding "train horns" behind the cab and /or under the steps, you will here them coming.
 
On the light question, I read that on a vehicle 8' or wider (maybe somewhat narrower too) there should be a cluster of 3 lights in the center and one on each side of them to identify over a certain width. Hopefully not too confusing.
 
Air horns so yo can hear a truck coming!
If people can't see or hear a big thang like a truck coming, the horns have little value.
 
The horn is under the hood and is activated by a electrical button on the steering wheel.

On the lights.....

There should be 3 lights centered on the truck. These are called Identification lamps.
They should be on top of the cab and should be spaced at least 6 inches and not more than 12 inches apart.

Then you have 2 Clearance lamps; One on each side of the vertical centerline to indicate overall width.

All 5 of these lights are required on trucks that are 80 inches or more wide.

While it is OK to add more lights it would be very uncommon for a truck manufactory to do so especially in single units.
Where was this 6th lamp located???
 
This is my 95 9300 IHC.Two factory air horns are under the cab floorboard,lanyard valve is still up in the roof.

This truck was what looked like a new Pete with six evenly spaced lights across the roof.
 
That's what I thought also, this new looking Pete had six evenly spaced lights on it.
 
I saw on one truck two rows of clearance lights,
and they were five in a row. I can't see that much
drag on an air horn. What I can see is removing
that nice looking chrome horn from the roof and
putting a way cheaper horn somewhere else.

I have a 73 Ford f250 that got ten miles to the
gallon empty,loaded, headwind, tailwind, uphill,
down hill, did't matter, ten miles to the gallon.
 
I figured law required a horn, most likely did not say how loud. And if the law did, the horn is at the minimum loudness. I think the chrome horns on the roof of a truck adds class to the truck. I an sure a couple of nickels were saved by taking the horns from the roof and putting something cheaper out of sight.
