Had leftover corned beef and cabbage for supper tonite. Why is it called corned beef? Is it the way it is prepared or raised? Trying to figure out the difference between regular beef and corned beef. Chris

Corn is anything that is a kernal or grain, in this case salt.
In English English, not American English, any grain crop was called corn. They called our corn Maize.

Corned beef is cured with granular salt.

Edit, I didn't think about the pepper corns, another gain of 'corn.' I bet you are right.

Do you have any documentation of that? My wife makes corned beef and cabbage every year and I would much prefer lamb chops.

Its sort of true, my wife's family is from ireland 2 generations back but corned beef is only really a north american irish thing. Family in ireland don't seem to eat it.
