80-90 gear grease

I purchased 5 gallon pail of Wolfshead 80w90
for 49.30 yesterday. I thought it was High?

Straight 50 or 60 weight motor oil provides better protection and is copper , bronze and brass friendly. GL-5 can attack copper .

Again you are right on the mark. Hard sell though (An oil instead of a grease).
 
Straight 40W motor oil it the same viscosity as 90w gear oil. SAE30 or SAE40 motor oil is often the exact same oil that is sold as GL1 90W gear oil.
 
I'd be leary of the motor oil idea as I thought gear lube had additives to help the oil cling to the gears. Plus heavy weight motor oil is a lot harder to find.
 
90W gear oil is the same thickness/weight as 40W motor oil. GL1 90W if made true-to-form has no anti-wear-additives. It's supposed to be pure mineral oil - just as SAE 40W motor oil is. The GL1 standard is no longer enforced or verified so anybody can call their oil GL1 regardless of what is in it.

Straight 40wt motor oil is straight mineral oil without additives?
Even Detroit Diesel rated SF-2 straight weight Rotella 1 has some additives.
