I planted corn in a patch last year and sprayed it with atrazine. Will it be ok to plant a garden in the same place this year?

or sorghum. Most Veggies are pretty susceptible to Atrazine. I sure wouldn't want to put all the time and effort into a garden, just to have it never do anything.

Ive always been told tha attrazine has a3 year carryover.Do not plant anything but corn for 3 years after the last application.Your veggies will die...

Carry over will kill your crop it will take a few yrs for it to go away plowing just mite help but dont count on seed growing at least the first yr.

One Spring when I wished to seed native grass on ground that had been getting Atrazine applications, I was advised to test the dirt for the chemical by seeding a sample of oats. We did that, it grew fine and so did the grass.

A bunch of garden type crops won't do well.

Probably have to wait for the 3rd year for a garden.

I follow corn sprayed with the maximum amount of atrazine (1 1/2 lb/acre) with beans every year without problems. Unless it was very dry and/or you sprayed late with more than the allowable rate I would give it a go. Spray overlap resulting in a high rate of atrazine could be a localized problem.

i would say it depends on:
-what rate did you use?
-when in the year?
-what type of soil (texture, organic matter, ph, type of clays/parent material)?
-what tillage and to what depth since then?
-how much rainfall, particularly leaching rains?
-what do you want to grow now?

i've heard of atrazine being a problem, but "here" (LI, NY) with well drained soils and leaching rains in the spring, I've never had a problem the following year after using 1# active.

really gotta try it and see what happens.

It's hard to know for sure until you try it. You should be able to look up how sensitive each crop will be. If you have the space, I'd move the garden, or expand it on one side to plant the most sensitive crops in untreated ground.

I think big blue stem is Atrazine tolerant. I am sure it is once it is established, cause I sprayed Atrazine in a thin stand once to keep the weeds down.

Read the label! Carryover depends on application rate, as well as soil type, latitude of application. Years ago we used 3 lbs/acre, carryover for a year was always an issue. Later, at 1 lb/acre, in combo with other herbicides....maybe no problem.
