Alternator hookup

Anyone know an alternator from an 89 Cavalier
should be hooked up to a tractor? I think the
alternator is good, but I haven't gotten anything
out of it. The connector to the alternator has
brown wire, a brown with white strip wire and a
heavier black with red strip wire. These wires are
in addition to the output wire. Any help would be
appreciated. Thank you.

If this is the alternator I'm thinking it is, the terminals should be labeled S,F,L,and P.

S will jump over to the output terminal.

L will connect to either a charge indicator lamp, or a 50 ohm resistor wired to the ign. side of the ignition switch.

F and P are not used.

The Black/Red wires are hot all the time from battery, like mentioned above you can jump the little one to bigger output. The Brown/White wire is the "on" trigger wire and it sends power to the alternator from ignition for charging, no need for a resister on these alternators, its built into the regulator. The solid brown wire is simply for the charge indicator lamp. If using this you would supply power to the bulb and this brown wire would get grounded by the alternator to turn on the bulb.

Getting a CS type pigtail to plug into it make things easier. I assume you've got a Delco CS alternator.
