Trailer titles in Georgia

Interesting discussion I'm having with the county
and whether I need a title for the trailer I just
bought. It's a gooseneck and the only definition
on their site it falls under is fifth wheel. It
says on the state site that a title is not
required. They insist that I must get a title
because it's over 5,000 lbs (nothing mentioned on
the state site about that).

So, it's all over about $18 and the fact that I
want it done correctly and by the book. I am
going to have to pay tax anyways and I don't want
to pay more that my fair share. I already had to
pay 6.5% of the value of the vehicles I already
had bought and paid taxes on years ago just to get
them titled in Georgia when I moved here.

So, here is the link and I'll let you guys comment
on where it falls by the state guidelines. It's a
28'x102" Loadtrail gooseneck trailer.
Georgia Dept Revenue does it need a title?

Well, I had to wait until they opened at 8:30 to go inside and find out their system was down and had been for a couple days. Then to hear them tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. Point them to the state website and they ignore me. I just get tired of people that don't listen and don't care.

I could not get the link to take me to the question & answer part ?

Do they want you to also put plates on it ?

A title would be good to have if a 1 shot deal. but plates cost you year after year and if it mostly sits it's another rip off.

Doesn't matter what we think it only matters what the judge down there thinks if you end up in front of him !

No Q&A Mike M. Just click on what requires a title and what doesn't according to the state.

They now tell me that a fifth wheel is a piece of equipment. And that I have a trailer and it must be titled. So, I guess I burn another morning dealing with their crap for $18.

Oh, and they can't tell me the tax until they put it in their system.

Colekicker --If you are doing any agriculture production you may qualify for the Ga Ag Tax Exemption , go to GATE to see if you qualify. It exempts sale tax for most things used in agriculture. Not sure but may save you the 6.5% tax on the trailer - won"t hurt to check.

That about like Pa. every day. We have to have a title for ever car. If it is junk Then we need a Junk title. Title for all trailers, Only thing you can pull with out plates that I know of is them there two wheeled car carriers, And that may of changed, They were talking about changing it anyways.

Here is one for you. I have a tow dolly. I have never seen any tow dolly with a tag in any state. Friend borrowed it and was stopped by cops told had to have a tag, gave him a warning. I took all the paper work to the tag office and had to argue with them to get them to tag the dolly. They gave in when I told them I wanted a letter from them that stated it did not need a tag so that I or my friends could show the cops it was not needed.

Go figure.

'cording to hat I read, you need title because it's factory built and not homemade and also because it weighs more than 2001#. If it is a Load Trail then why don't you have a title for it? If you do have a title for it from whom ever you bought it from then why wouldn't you want it in your name? Maybe I'm missing something in your inquiry.

You have to wonder about those state idiots. You don't need a title for invalid tricycles or self propelled wheelchairs. What a laugh!

New trailer, I have a certificate of origin. If you read the list of title required, it doesn't fall under any of those categories. That's my point.

I see them with tags all the time on the interstate. Most have a factory mount for a plate.

Mine does not have a factory tag mount. But it is a 2005 dolly. Maybe they have changed the rules. Or maybe some states require them I don't know. When I bought the dolly I checked and was told by the tag office that I did not need a tag. Plus to get the tag I had to argue with them to get it done last year as they kept insisting it didn't need one.

I bought a new Load Trail 20' bumper pull 10,000# about 3 yrs ago and am sitting here looking at a Title just like a car comes with...certificate of title wrote right across top. But this is MI and not Georgia maybe they aren't required to issue a title when new down there. RB
