Just got home from the 12 day trip. We were in a lot of you guy's neighborhoods but there just didn't seem to be enough time to contact any of you to see if you were home. We were on HWY 20 across Iowa, stopped at the quad Cities to see my sis. Then we went down I 74 in ILL to I 155 then I 55 to Memphis and down 61 to Clarksdale Ms to Marilyn's brother's house. Then we found our way back to I 55 and ended up in New Orleans to stay three days with my land lady, who is a spry 91 . It was 37 degrees and drizzly for Mardi Gras day, bummer. Going home was pretty much the reverse of going down. We saw very, very little warm weather. (Sigh). Now we come home to find out the compuker's router took a dump so I have to post this with the I Pad, using up data minutes on Verizon. GRRRR! I sure would have liked to visit with a few of you but it just didn't work out. Maybe next time. Jim

Glad the trip went well. I've thought the same thing, traveled around and wondered how many of you guys I just passed. Getting together with other Michigan YT'ers at Oakley in the summer is a fun time and I look forward to it.

Sorry our weather did not work out for you. Lots of tourist spend lots of money getting here only to have it spoiled by the weather.
Maybe you got to see some of our other sites and enjoy some of our great food as a consolation.

Would really have liked to meet up with you but the timing was just not right. Went Wednesday and had an epidural steroid injection. Seems to be helping as I am going to try and go back to work tomorrow.

That's good news About the back, John. I had one of those epidurals once and it didn't do any good. Found out later the steroid doesn't work on me. At Mardi Gras I had my winter lined jeans and winter parka on with the hood up so I was warm but we still had a lot of fun. Maybe next year? Jim

Well Fixerupper: when you where on 20 in Iowa you where only 15 miles away from me.

Glad you had a good trip. It still is nice to be back home.

Didn't know you were that close to 20. By the way, what is in the air in Cedar Rapids? When we drove through I started sneezing like crazy. Not a good thing to do in heavy traffic. LOL.

Well, gonna hit the hay. Been a long day. Jim

John in La:

Is Brennan's in the French Quarter still around? Back in '59 when my family visited New Orleans, we went to Brennan's for dinner; really neat old restaurant. After dinner we strolled around the French Quarter & I bought my first Indian Head Penny at a little coin shop there - a big deal for a 12 year old kid. Still have that penny somewhere.

Doc

It is always good to get home, no matter how good or bad the trip. Channel 4 says it's gonna reach 68 in Cherokee today.

I ate there abouit 1970, great food. As I recall the cook came out and cooked your entrée at the tableside.

Walt, as I understand Brennan's closed in 2013 but a family cousin was trying to reopen it. I was in an Irish bar called O' something, I don't remember the exact name. It's a bar in the French Quarter where my landlady and her future husband liked to go Back in the early fifties. Ordered a drink there that I don't remember the name of, but it put me in the party mood.LOL. Jim

Dale, it's nice to be back north where it's warmer than most of the temps we saw in the south. LOL! I brought home a couple of tins of coffee with chicory. I love the stuff. Jim

Well you got within an hour there when you crossed the river on I 155. Sorry the weather was not nice. Spring in Tennessee can be anything.

Was it O'Bians and was the drink a Hurricane maybe. I was ther years ago, still have the glass, wife uses it for a vase. gobble

What's with Memphis anymore? That was my favorite town when I went to school there 50 years ago.

Now I hear It's deteriorated badly. I talked to a fellow recently who says he lives in the suburbs, but refuses to go downtown. Said he hadn't been downtown in 15 years.

We went to the Farm and Gin show in downtown Memphis last Saturday. It was the first time I had been downtown so I don't have anything to compare it to. The south part of town didn't look like a place where I would want to live. Jim

I've lived a few different places ranging from a city block to about seven miles from route 20 for 64 years. I'm in Illinois and always told my wife I wanted to take it out west someday so she got me Historic Route 20 book for Christmas. Claims to be America's longest highway 3,365 miles from Newport Oregon to Boston, I want to go west, she wants to go east.

It looked like this

Brennan's is still open on Royal street in the heart of the quarter.
They went threw some rough times in the late 70's when the family was arguing over who owned the restaurant.
They final settled it after years in and out of court.
The 3 sons of the original owner own the original Brennan's in the quarter.
The brothers and sisters of the original owner own Commander's Palace in New Orleans and Brennan's of Houston.

Thanks, John. Four years ago or so my landlady took us to Commanders for my birthday. This Iowa farm boy felt a little out of place in that joint. LOL. Jim
