Mules, F12 and Dad

Dad is gone now but he always talked about plowing with mules when he was growing up. In the last two years He and Mom stayed with us and We would talk about old things he even said that when his dad bought an F12 Farmall tractor they still used the mule plows. After 50 something years it finally dawned on Me he wasn't walking behind these plows he was riding on them. So I asked him and He says yes. All these years I have been feeling sorry for him. I realize that still not as easy as plowing all day with diesel tractor with power steering but not near as bad as walking.

No, not as bad as walking but either way the South end
of a North bound mule doesn't always smell the best! :)

Ron, do you know how many miles a farmer walked to plow one acre with a mule and a one mule turn plow?

My Dad was born in 37 so he never had anything to do with horses, but my mothers Dad did. He's been gone for 15-20 years, I'm 42, but when ever he was looking at a magazine and seen horses pulling a plow or wagon, he just stopped talking. I think he missed his horses, never asked their names, it's like he was daydreaming about being with the horses again. He would talk about them then, one occasion he was plowing with 5 or 6 of his brothers and they went to a new field and neighbor was across the fence plowing by himself. After a few rounds of the six of them plowing the neighbor went home, later on he talked to the neighbor and siad he was just disgusted since they were covering so much more ground than he was. chris

Hey I am only 53 but up till my 14th birthday I plowed tobacco for my dad with a mule, then my dad bought an old H farmal with cultivators and we used it for years.

I am 65 and I plowed mules in tobacco and corn. Rode a drag when I was about 7 or 8 years old. Also mowed with a team of mules. Picked corn by hand and tossed it in a wagon pulled by mules.

I'm 54 and hope one day to be able to run a straight furrow with my drafters. The older I get the better a sulky plow looks! I love a walking plow but my ankles are shot and I'm not sure how I'd do on a walking plow.

Horses and mules my let some gas pass on occasion, but diesel and gas fumes don't smell so hot either, and you won't need ear muffs or a cab to protect you from the noise using a horse.

My grandpa started with horses/mules until they traded for an f-12 farmall then they traded that for a John Deere B. He was born in 1920 and we just lost him acouple years ago. Always said his first "job" on the farm was to deliver water to the men cutting broom corn. Sure miss all of his stories, luckily for us he did write a journal during his last few years and just filled it with a bunch of old sayings and stories that he would write down as he recalled them.
