ROPS for Ford 9N

Been yanking stumps out of the sidehills in my pasture at the hobby farm for last few days. Noticing tractor really wants to slide on me especially when tightening up the cable and jerking. Tried hooking lower on axle to lower center of gravity but front wants to jump. My only other tractor is a Snapper. Probably need a ROPS. Have some 3" exhaust pipe left over. Would this be heavy enough for a ROPS or where could I buy one? Regards, Fritz

I would say no on the exhaust pipe. Look for heavy walled pipe or better yet square tubing. Try googling ROPS for a 9N. Might find something.

First, I'm a Ford N fan, so I'm not bashing the tractor.
Pulling stumps with a 9N is asking for trouble. ROPS or not.
Unless someone has added an aftermarket one, they don't
even have a solid drawbar to pull with.
My best advice would be to hire someone with a dozer, then
use the 9N to clean up the mess.
Another option would be to rent a mini excavator to dig them up.
Either way is probably less money than what you'll break on
the 9N and certainly cheaper than the injuries from a roll over.
To answer your question, exhaust pipe is not heavy enough.
They do make add on ROPS for them. They're not cheap.
I have heard that some states subsidize them though.

Hooking to the lift arms will just break the pins out of the housing. Pulling from the axle will make your wife a widow when it flips over on you. Pulling from the top link, it is a wonder your obituary is not already in the paper.

Pulling stumps with an 9n is saying I want to buy a clutch like tomorrow.. ROPS or a true factory rops would cost more than the tractor is worth. Something to keep you from getting killed like heavy pipe fastened to axels could be made but would not be a certified rops. Best bet is like the others have said , find another way for that project.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say we've got a troll. If not, well then carry on.

tomtirediron- (Try changing your IP address iffin you are going post). You know someone may read this post and think it is okay to use "muffler" pipe to fabricate a ROPS? I have noticed many users that only read the first couple of posts and think that is all they need to read, instead of 'getting' the entire picture.

I feel what you posted was misleading and dangerous for 'Newbies or others searching the "web" for keywords.

Greg.

What you are doing is an accident WAITING to happen.I'm surprised it hasn't already....If the hill is steep enough that you are slideing sideways,ITS TOO STEEP!!!Hire the job done by a professional.Cheaper than a broken tractor;a hospital bill; or a FUNERAL!

Hill sides and the N series fords do not mix well and will get you dead if you keep up doing what your trying to do

These little tractors were engineered to pull with the 3 point system and do a pretty good job using only the equipment designed for them. not drawbar pulling, Save your roll over bar money for life insurance. There has been a lot of people killed on these tractors in the last 70 years doing exactly what you are doing..

The guy who did this was told not to brush hog along the hill side but he did not heed the warning and did so any how. Tractor slide side ways till it hooked a tree then spun 180 on the tree. messed up his left knee since his knee was in the way of the tree. Took me and a friend 2 days of working to pull it off the tree and spin it around so it did not flip over. Up hill rear tire was 6 plus inches off the ground. And yes it had an ORC on it

I've got some property that I bushog thats got some steep areas. If I that danger feeling that I'm getting to steep I just leave it. I don't think exhaust pipe is thick enough for ROPS. Besides that there's engineering and testing that goes into ROPS.

Even if you have a ROPS, you don't want to test it out. Oh yea, exhaust systems require the best steel... not! If this is a legitimate post, you'd probably have to get a fab shop make you one out of heavier structural steel.

Fritz,Foc-it-al I have a a feeling you are pulling our leg more than stumps.Your user name said slow might sum it up.But in case you are really looking for an answer Roll Quards are made out of heavy steel and I would guess the ones I have handled weigh at least 300#s.A ten foot piece of exhaust tubing probably led than 25#.You might want to use the exhaust tubing to make a stack or two in the back of your new hobby farm diesel pickup as that would sure look NICE.wink wink like Tx.Jim At least you got a few answers.Keeps the board awake!

Your 9n is in need of some sea foam in the gas tank. You will have to go buy a new one ton pickup so the guys at Napa will know you are a real farmer and give you the good stuff not the watered down stuff.
