OT Electric rates

I am looking at my electric rate structure. It is not as simple as saving electricity to save money. I pay 11.5 cents on the first 1200KW, then 2.5 cents after that.

I am looking at reducing my cost, but the 2.5 is really super cheap.

Here is a good one for you I get these calls all the time from my power company. They always ask me if I want to go green? The way to qualify is that I got to use about 150 dollors or more a month. Then they will help you go solar panels. My shop is 1300 sq foot in my back yard I was thinking go solar panels on the roof. The bottom line is I only use if I am lucky up to 50.00 dollors of power per month. Just think my eletric metter would be tuning back wards faster than I was useing it. My power company would not like the ideal of cutting me a check for the power that the panels would be produceing. Interesting Right. Brent

David must live in the TVA area & Brent, I'm afraid that you over estimate the quantity of solar power you will get.

If you use most of the 1200 for normal use it might pay to put in some electric heat! We pay about .11 at home and .135 at the cabin, and at the cabin there is a $37 meter charge, every month.

Who is your utility? Is that the flat kw charge or does it include the meter charge and the other small charges that add up? Pretty cheap compared to our REMC rate.

Duke,
My last bill for a total electric 2100 sq ft, brick shack was $316, tax included, 30 day billing cycle, no heat pump, no other heat source, just well insulated. On the bill it said my average rate is $.1001. Usage 2953 kw-hrs = $295.62 tax = $20.69 I had many record sub zero days on this bill,

The previous bill was for 34 days. 2806 kw-hr = $282.67 + tax $19.79 = $302.46 average rate $.1007

In North Dakota Slope Electric charges 3.4 cents a kwh for electric heat. You need 2 meters . Otherwise a 13$ base charge and 9.3 cents for the first 500 kwh and 5.5 cents after that. Hard to argue against electric heat. Except you need a backup heat source, because frankley they are not all that reliable, espically when needed most. In northern California Pacific Gas and Electric is 13.230 kwh for tier 1 use and 15.04 for tier 2. I don't know the difference.

My last bill averaged 17 cents per Kw in Ontario. Three differen rates on a smart meter.
The market was "de-regulated" to save the consumer money in the late 1990"s. so far cost per Kw has almost doubled when inflation is considered.

external_link is just getting rolling on closing down coal fired power plants.

They had to close down a coal plant at Chamois Missouri last fall due to EPA regs. Just wait, it's gonna get much worse.

Kentucky Utility for me is 0.075 cents per kilowatt. They do have a few environmental and fuel surcharges to add to it though.

GeneMO,
Where I live, they have been converting over to natural gas powered generators for many years. They call them peaking plants, but soon they will be replacing the coal fired plants.

This will cause an increase in not only electric rates, it will also increase natural gas prices.

Heard on the news today, we might start exporting natural gas.

Do you really want to know why the EPA is putting an end to coal plants?

Yeah right, and at my sugarhouse, where I used only 11 KWHr last month, with the meter charge, electric assistance program fee, energy efficiency charge, sales tax at six percent, storm surcharge of 1.4845%, minus a whole whopping two cents power adjustment charge CREDIT, it works out to just over $2.10/KWHr.

At the shop, where I used 12 KWHr it was more like $2.00 even, plus about $32.00 for the security light.

We did a lot better at the house 534 KWHr worked out to about .019 cents/KWHr.

This month and next with the sugarhouse up and running, I will use enough there to bring the rate down, but of course the actual bill will go up. At least I will get something for my money.

Same way with the shop, I will be usiong it much more with warm weather, and the welder really makes the meter spin.

Our rates average $.15/KWH, so they are far from the cheapest around. Maybe I should have bought some Consumers Power stock years ago!
