I heard several of the spring song birds yesterday, thought I was hearing things. -5 deg F. here this am, will be again tomorrow... Those poor birds certainly got their timing wrong this year...

I saw some on Sat. in Madison, SD, they were eating dried berries out of a tree. I didn't think they would come back with temps above and below zero. With the frost up to 6 feet deep I wonder how long it will be before they can find worms.

Middle Tennessee Our yard was covered with them yesterday morning , this morning 3 inches of ice and sleet.

You can see robin's all winter. Some never leave. When the red winged blackbirds return, you can be assured that spring is just around the corner. I didn't see, but heard some a week ago, but I think they turned around and headed south again.

They never really left SD. I had hundreds of males here quite often. We never had complete snow cover for more than a few days. I have lot s of eastern red cedars and they eat those berries. Also something on the ground there will be perhaps 500 in a flock in the alfalfa field feeding on something.

I live about 50 miles west of Albany, NY and I always see some robins during the winter.
It has been an especially harsh winter here and I have never seen more robins; literally flocks of fifty to a hundred some days.
Here are a few eating frozen apples off one of my scrub apple trees near the house on Feb 15th.
One reason I think I have seen so many is they tend to congregate along the roads where there is bare ground along the shoulders.

Like Brian said, they have been here in abundance all winter. I'm north and east of Albany 25 miles from VT. Not always the case, but with 2 mild winters '11-'12 and '12-'13, maybe they got into a different pattern, they and other critters, like turkeys have cleaned off all the apples, large and small that stayed on the trees, they eat staghorn sumac buds too, amazing that a live pray, worm and insect eating species can adapt and make it. I've raised orphans of these and they are tough birds, smart too, always fun to raise and release, they will hang around after and visit you, I had one brood that stayed all summer and were friendly, cause I raised em !
