Excide Battery

A few days ago I posted about a problem I was having with excide batteries. Some one stated that it was impossible to get 2 new battery's bad. Would you go for 3. I took the second battery back and they tested it the same as they did the first and it failed the load test. He had one left took that one off the shelf and I asked him to load test it before ZAIA left so he did. GUESS WHAT it failed. Got my money back and went somewhere else and bought one. It was -10 this morning ans tractor started right up

No real surprise to me. I bet all three were the same date code and likely were made on the same line. Either all were really old, or some other problem was common to the three. I also bet there were bad batteries in other locations with the same codes as well.

It's been 3 years since I bought a new battery. All my batteries are excide. I take a battery conductivity tester with, buy the best. Always check dates too. Saves making extra trips.

You could have had them load test battery before you left the store.

ON AVERAGE, Exide batteries have more problems than Johnson or Deka. I know I've opened up a can of worms with that statement and I'm sure I'm going to get the "I've had a hundred Exide batteries and they've all been good" statements. So be it. I actually have two Exide batteries in a couple of my vehicles right now because it's hard to turn them down when they are on sale for $75 or less at Menards and the same size is way over $100 at even the discount chains. Exide is reemerging out of bankruptcy, so maybe they are cutting corners even more than they used to.
I do know that they seem to be messier and have more corrosion as compared to other brands, but I can live with that.

With Exude NOTHING surprises me. And its only going to get worse with all the battery companies.. Just wait until we are no longer going to buy them at normal places. Have read a few times they will probably be only sold at special places..

Doesn't suprise me. Like I said on the other post I had 2 different vehicles that tried 3 batteries each before I got good ones.... From 2 different stores.

Hello Ivan,

Glade you got a good battery to get you going.
You said when you took #two battery back he tested it and it was bad. Wasn't the battery ALREADY DEAD?. Anytime you load test a battery it has to be FULLY charged. He should have charged the stock battery, and after that, it should have read 12.6 volts at 80 degrees F. Bet all of the batteries you brought in would have taken a proper charge. 3 out of 3? Not impossible, but
highly improbable...........

Had the same deal with a local dealer about 25 years ago. I have forgotten what brand he was selling, I think Interstate or Varta.
Anyhow, we were fitting dual batteries in an IH pickup to crank the 4-53 diesel engine we installed.

With one battery in each front corner of the engine bay, we decided it would be easiest to wire using a size 27 in one box and a 27F in the other. Only difference between 27 and 27F is that the POS and NEG post positions are reversed, so both batteries ended up with the POS post in front and inboard. Before connecting the two new batteries, I charged them with a 8 amp charger. The 27 was fine, the 27F was open circuit, no power would go in or out.

OK, back to the dealer for another new battery. I took the second new 27F home and put it on the charger. Same as the other one, open circuit, so headed the 6 miles back to the dealer again. After 2 bad ones in a row, I asked the dealer to test this third 27F battery. He did and it was another dud. He had 6 more 27F batteries sitting on the shelf, he checked every one as I stood there, all were duds, so he had 8 bad 27F batteries in stock.
We had to put our project on hold for a couple days while the dealer got in some new 27F batteries from the distributor. That pair 27 and 27F then ran with no problems for 6 years of hard use.

I forgot to add that I charged each battery I took back before I took it in so whatever charge it lost in the 15 mile drive I don't know. The one off the shelf I had no control over so I don't know how much charge it had. The guy that tested them was the owner of the shop so I assume he knew what he was doing.

I don't buy anything but Deka. My NAPA dealer tells
me that now they are making their batteries.

I buy quite a few batteries from a dealer that specializes in batteries. He always load tests them before you get the battery. One day a couple of years ago I needed two batteries for a dump truck (group 29 I think, or 31). I went there and the owner wasn't there. The guy gave me the batteries and I went home, one was no good. I then realized he never tested them. I called there and the owner was ticked, he said it happens, although it had never happened to me.
They met me half way for the exchange. (30 miles)
