OT- Steel Buildings

My son is looking at steel buildings for a shop with a house on the side. He is looking at Worldwide Steel. I would like him to buy local so if a problem arises can deal with the builder. Just wanting to hear any pros or cons about them.

I can't speak for Worldsteel but I got mine from American Steel out of PA. Sale was good, delivery time took forever and driver did not listen.

I live on long dirt road and he came out here with 53' flatbed with no way to turn around. Made for long tense day.

Make sure you get county stamp of engineering approval - here in FLA we have wind load requirements due to hurricanes.

We (me & my boys) put it up ourselves. If I was to do it again I would hire some local guys and get it done much quicker. The blueprints are good at identifying design but their construction prints and sequence was very confusing. Put the frame up and took it down 3x before I got it right.

FWIW I put mine on a concrete pad due to rain and knowing as I got older there would be less appetite for wallerin' around in the mud.

I don't know about Worldwide but if you borrow for the build or insure after the build talk to those people first. I have heard stories .I myself love the idea. Good luck!

I bought a ICON brand steel building. I was very impressed with the finished product. Unbelievably tight and solid. Tech support was awful at best. They are insane about having the correct total parts count but not about the correct parts in the count. Often I would have twice as much of one part but half as much of another. Some parts were not made correctly and needed to be "field" modified to fit. Had to spend a lot of time reading the blue prints and instructions the night before each step to be sure everything went smooth. This was complicated by a few missing sheets that had to be faxed before work. All the small delays resulted in having to pay a work crew an extra full day on the job and along with equipment rental. It was a hangar and they told me they work closely with all the door manufacturers. The door manufacturers told me they work closely with all the building manufacturers. Don't believe any of that. Some costly unnecessary work but I'm very happy with the end product. Nothing to burn or rot inside.

I have been told numerous times that most buildings are manufactured by only a few different mills and are then brokered out to the various selling firms. The ones doing the selling do not manufacture the building they are selling. Find a reputable dealer and odds are you will be better served. You get what you pay for. Mike

I do this everyday as a contractor. Don't know your pacticular brand your looking at, but when you can look at a neighbors building and they like it, it speaks volumes. My email is open if you would like further help.

You are talking about a steel frame and all? If you are talking post frame then I would buy local. Jim

Check with HARDSTEEL buildings, Decatur, Ne. They build and erect their buildings. Just had a large garage built by them, and am very impressed. Full slab, full steel frame, insulated, good windows, raised ridge siding and roofing, your choice of colors. They build all over a 5 state area.
