I found a JD black box population monitor for my old 7000 planter a while back. Thought I was making an upgrade for the better. I find myself in a jam. I sent if off for testing, it works, but i'm told I need a speed sensor/acre counter of sorts to make it work on my planter. Anyone have some info on this? Pictures of what it looks like or where it goes ect? Thanks.

The one on the 7000 is only monitor, light comes on if seed does not come out, maybe yours does more. The 7200 has a radar speed sensor and will give populations.

Heres what it looks like. I think it's the same vintage as the ones with just lights.

Ag tronix is pretty good at setting a person up with monitor
parts and do dads.

They have a couple options on speed sensors, from GPS box
to a magnetic sensor that you point at a sprocket to count
revolutions and get the speed.

My old planter had a bicycle wheel with a similar magnetic
pickup that counted the spokes going by.

Check out the link.

Speed sensors

No, it needs to know the speed you are going, otherwise it can't tell how many acres you are covering. Population needs both area/distance and seed count input to be figured.

I have the little round GPS antennas plugged into my newer JD monitor, and my Magnum tractor. They plug right in where a radar gun would.

"Sensor One", I think?

Thats what I was thinking. The monitor is at sensor one right now. I had them check it out. They aren't sure if they have a sensor that will work??? But on the other hand, they say the monitor is working properly??? So I'm not sure what i'm going to do. I called ag express. They say the only sensor that will work right is the one from Deere. Which is fine it's just really $$$$. And I don't know where it's supposed to mount because i can't find any pictures or anyone that can remember what these old planters look like with this installed.

Well, that sure is confusing! My sensor-1 GPS "antenna" came from a Deere dealer.

Maybe my set up is enough newer it is totally different. The little round "hockey puck" antenna mounts anywhere.

Do you need to be getting a signal off a rotating shaft, rather than GPS satellites?

Yes, or at least that's what understand. Both sensor 1 and ag express say the GPS or Radar will not work with this type of monitor. Probably because of it's age. I'd upgrade to something newer yet but I only run about 75 acres. I just want to use something like this that doesn't cost a fortune and still let me know what the planters doing.

Then I wonder if there's an appropriate manual for your monitor available from JD? (If I remember right, my monitor has its own book). That may show, and tell about applications, parts, etc. needed?

Yeah there is a book. I found one on e-bay. TM-1270. Should be here next week. Hopefully it's the right one and will shed some light on this.
