Bought a milk house heater a couple months ago and went to move it this morning i noticed the cord was cracked where the wires went into the heater .the only thing that i could think of because its not old and the plastic is not melted maybe the cold ? i have seen cords like that one was on a clock and one was on a friends lamp the wires were exposed good for a short or fire

I just had one in my office quit . opened it up , found wire to temp switch had got hot and burned in two. replaced wire , cleaned contacts , works great . Had it for 5yrs.

Hope you used some wires designed for hi temps.
When I scrap out an electric range, I always save some of the hi temp wires used in the range.

I have had a couple of heaters do that and a few battery chargers. Brittle plastic that can't handle cold weather. Nothing more upsetting than stuff that breaks taking it out of the box.

Wouldn't a book of matches do the job quicker? Sorry just my opinion on those heaters. The cheap cords like that are very susceptible to cold weather.

I purchased one @ tsc a couple of years ago. Didnt use it til this year. Had it working in my utility room and it was cycling on the 1500 watt setting For no good reason it quit and would not come back on. I picked it up and heard a clunk then rattle. Took it apart and found what I assume was the weight for the tip over switch laying in the bottom. Looked like it had melted, I couldnt tell where it came from. Solution,........garbage can.
Thanks tsc

I have several old style milk room heaters and kind of hate the big clunky things. That big tin cabinet, the red hot wire heating element and the whimpy fan that makes more noise than air movement.

I trashed a couple of the most junky ones and bought a couple little "Comfort Zone " brand heaters from TSC. Only about 6 inches square, has a ceramic 1500 watt heating element that runs much cooler /safer than the hot wire type and has a much stronger fan. $15 on sale, $20 regular.
I would never go back to the clunky old style milk room heater.
All have the plastic cord that will crack if you bend them when very cold.

Whatever happened to the UL ratings on such equipment?

From what I understand, any powered product must have samples submitted to UL for extremely expensive and extensive testing before it can be marketed.

So what's happened? Is this no longer a requirement or have the standards been lowered to protect the importers?
