Had my 2 vertibraes fused last Wed @ Gundersen hospital in LaCrosse,Wi. Am in alot of pain which was expected.Would very highly recomend this hospital.I hope the fusion takes and I can hold my mind togeather during the healing proc- ess.

I had a laminectomy and discsectomy on two discs this past August. The first week after surgery was the worst week of my life. I thought the pain meds would be enough too keep the pain at bay but quickly realized I had to keep ice on my back to stay somewhat comfortable.

Wear the Back Brace at all times and be patient..

Hydrocodone is your Friend..!!

Don't be afraid to use it BEFORE the pain gets bad.

I ended up getting a Neuro-Stim put in after a couple years to eliminate pain from scar tissue and that WORKS..no more numbness in my thigh.Hip and Foot..all from a little Magnetism..!!

BushogPapa,
Hydrocodone painkillers work,I take them for bi-lateral neuropathy, which is creeping up into my hands now.I take 1 1/2 at night before bed time, thats just to keep me from waking up screaming in pain, during the day it varies with movement and weather depression, waiting on spring.Hoping to reduce the usage, you should be thankful they're available,I am.My old friend who passed away with cancer, used morphine patches,I don't want to go that route.Best of luck to you.
Regards,
LOU

You should look into the possibility of an Electro-Stim..

My Dr ( Gladstone McDowell ) in Cols. Oh. has used these to control all areas of pain..from chronic knee or wrist pain, to pain blocking for terminally Ill patients..

Only deal is, you MUST NOT do anything to cause the leads to move, for 6 weeks, as they probably cannot be properly re-implanted as well again..

I have even successfully gone back to Western square Dancing and have no problems..!

I hope you heal fast. I've heard the first couple of days are pure he!!. Hope I never have to go through it. Take care of yourself. Jim

My wife had a fusion and a disc replacement at the end of January by Dr Davis at Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse Wi. We chose Gundersen who is an hour and a half away over Mayo which is only twenty minutes away. We"ve just had much more positive results and patient care with Gundersen and we are so grateful to have found them. It"s definitely a major surgery and she"s still healing but seems to be feeling a bit better each day and hopefully this healing period will be worth it and result in little to no back pain in the future. Take it easy and wish you all the best in your recovery!

ten days in the hospital, six months with no lifting over 8 pounds(gal of iced tea)six months walking, no mowing, no cycling and no work. It will be twelve years this March, no pain. Washington University, St Louis MO Dr. Bridwell

I've had seven spinal surgeries so far. Three on neck and four on lumbar region. Everything in my neck is fused except the very top and the very bottom, that will have to be done eventually. My spinal canal was growing closed so after all the fusions the Dr. took off the back side of all the fused vertabreas. My spinal chord had been compressed for a while and parts of it had shutdown, when the pressure was relieved and it started working again it was getting hit with a cattle prod, Dr. told me it was going to be bad but even if he could have kept me in the hospital he couldn't give me enough pain medice to stop it. Lasted for two weeks and then got better real fast.
Have had 2 laminectomies and one I can't spell or pronounce but the Dr took out some bone that was pressing against nerve roots coming out the sides. the last one was a two level fusion of L-4, L-5. All this done in Houston at Texas Orthopedic Hospital, owned and operated by a group of orthoppedic specialist called the Fondren Group. I highly reccommend them. The very rich and powerful from all over the world come to this group of Drs.

had 2 done 4 yrs. ago, you have about 3 weeks that are not gonna be any fun, but if you've been suffering very long with the back you'll be glad you did it,...my first was in 85 that didn't take and I had forgotten what feeling good felt like

Had my surgery in August 2011. Woke up in recovery and the pain was GONE. It has remained gone (mostly), but I have strength issues. Gladly have that instead of pain. Doc gave me a bottle of Hydrocodone for pain. I ended up using FOUR of them - haven't had the need for it.
I'll never be "100% pain free", but it is WAY better then it used to be - and I can WALK!

Keep your head up! It will get better. I had back surgery three years ago. 5 days in the hospital, and six months of lifting no more then 6 pounds or a gallon of milk.
follow the doctors instructions to a T. Do all your physical theraphy like your suppose too.

Like everyone said the first three weeks or so are the worst. After that your going to feeling better the key is to not to forget that you had backsurgery because your going to be surprised how well you are feeling. My pain was considerably less then it had been in years after the surgery. I had mine done in Nashville TN
