John Deere 1530 utility tractor

My neighbor has a forlorn 1530, haven't run it in years. Story is the son was bush hogging and the pto quit so they parked it, they don't farm. Does anybody have any experience with these, apparently they were only made for three years. I was wondering if it might be worth looking into buying and fixing for a spare tractor, it does have good tires :<) .

Neighbor had one years ago, I used it a couple of times and it was a handy little tractor. They were pretty well thought of at the time. It would be worth looking into, especially in a situation like this. When the owner isn't in the business, and doesn't need it, somebody coming along with a "modest" offer just saves him the trouble of dealing with it, and you'll probably get a good deal.

I've got a 1520 gasser. Pretty much the same tractor. It's always been a handy little tractor other than it seems to like to burn gas. The diesel might be better. I've never had to mess with the PTO. You'd probably have better luck posting on the JD forum.

Would sure make a good tractor if it can be bought right and fixed. Trouble is at this point you have no idea as to what all it may need and parts are really getting high for everything.
See what they need for it. If scrap value for sure get it !
Gas or diesel ? not sure but may only be worth 3,000 (gas) to 5,000 (diesel) if up and running good ?

The tractor has the 164 ci diesel engine, 8 speed forward and 4 reverse gears with a dry clutch, independent 540 pto and about 45 pto hp. It does have very good tires and I happen to have a good 12 volt battery to replace the missing one. The rear fenders are dinged a little but the rest of the sheet metal is good. I haven't heard it run yet and I suspect it will take a little effort to make it run as it hasn't moved in 6+ years.

My brother bought a new 1530 diesel and it was his only tractor for a couple of years. He then bought a 2950 and a new 6000 series about 4 years ago. He has really used the 1530 in about every way possibe. He had it rebuilt about 12 years ago. The tach. broke at 8000 hours but it has been several years and the tractor is still going. I have driven it and it still drives good. I have seen 1530 diesels in good condition sell for $6000 in mid TN.

I have a 1520 diesel that has been around the world. We used it in the broiler houses for over 15 years. Raked hay, dug post holes, baled square bales, and everything else a 45 horsepower tractor was capable of doing. Still a good tractor and would bring more than I paid for it 35 years ago. It has been a tough little tractor.

I think it's about the same as a 1020. I've had one of those for 32 years. That tractor shouldn't even be in one piece anymore, but it's still dependable.

I don't remember seeing a lever between the shifts,
I'll look the next time I'm down that way in a
couple of days. Is there something I should look
for as the woman doesn't know much about it, and I
don't either.

I have a Ford 860, everything is mechanical, I
don't know about the 1530 except what I read in
Tractor Data. Is there something I should look for
that will differentiate between the two types?
Apparently they asked at the JD Dealer here and
were told it would have to be split for more money
than they wanted to spend. So nobody knows what is
actually wrong with it. They have been mowing
around it long enough that they might want to part
with it.
