OT Alternator

noise under the hood sounds like the alternator bearing might be going out (2002 Blazer). Called O'rielly's $159.00 for new one (probably rebuilt but has lifetime warranty). Appears there is a difference available between a 105 amp and 130 amp. Anyone know why there would be a difference in the offering? I do have the tow package if that could make a difference, but if that was the case why the offering?

Typically the old one will have the amperage etched into it, next to the part number. Taking a look or comparing the alternator with the two choices of "new" ones is the only way to be sure to get the correct one. (Other than going to the stealership with the VIN!)

And, WHY do they do it? Because they CAN! the other makes are no different in that respect.

Could be the accessories make a difference.

Years ago, I went to a parts store to buy an alternator belt (pre-serpentine) for an Olds Cutlass and was asked if the car had a rear window defroster. I asked what that had to do with it.

Turned out cars with a rear window defroster had a smaller pulley on the alternator to spin the alternator faster, and therefore took a different belt.

Used to be able to buy rebuild kits fairly reasonable <$25. Not really that much to them. Do you have a good rebuild shop nearby? We have one in town that does some jobs for little more than I can buy the parts for. Terry's Auto Electric.

The smaller of the 2 is for a basic run of the mill car/truck with out things like power windows etc. The big it for the ones with all the options. To bad your to far from me I could probably save you 5-10% on the price

The amp rating will be stamped in it some where, You'll probably need to remove it to find it.

I've seen three different alternators on your vintage Blazer. 105 or 130 amp Delcos (CS130D) or the 140 amp Densos. Many places sell the Delcos brand new (not rebuilt) for $85, free shipping and no sales tax to most people. For those prices - I don't even fix them - or at least not right away. Since they are new - you get to keep the old one and use on something else later if you want.

Thanks all- I went to Oreilly's and they did not have one with the wire connection in the same place as mine. Stopped by Advance (which I pass to go to Oreilly's) and they had it for $114.00 (also lifetime warranty).

If it is squeaking, make sure it is not the serpentine belt making the noise. My ford sounded like a bearing going out and it was the belt. They seem to squeak more in damp weather. Alternator is fine.

Those so-called "lifetime" warrantees mean little to me. They are all "limited" warrantees and open to interpretation of the store you deal with. I had a lifetime warranty muffler from Advance and they refused to replace it when it rusted out after two years. Why? The warranty clearly states "We will replace any part that may fail due to a defect in materials or workmanship under normal use and service after proper installation." Since the muffler rusted out due to road salt - there were NO defects according them. Ergo, no free replacement. I also had a "lifetime" alternator from Advance that failed after four years. They DID give me a free replacement but that one only had a 90 day warranty. I.e. -the "lifetime" was over. I had similar experiences at NAPA with "lifetime" brakes. They no longer honor those warrantees.

Exactly what I was thinking, but upon removing the belt it was definately the alternator making the growl. Much quiter now!
