State road plowing

Kuddos and thanks to the road crews on the huge mess they have been cleaning up around here in southern MN the last two days!!

Yesterday, our son was at a station near a state highway and sat in his pickup and watched for a while - and snapped some photos. If the road sign wasn't off to the side of the grader, it'd be impossible to tell there was actually a road there.

The state had a grader with V plow and two state trucks at the site. Son said the grader would go forward, hit the drift and try to push through - the snow was so deep it came over the top of the V plow... then he'd get stuck. Then the trucks would pull him backward to get him freed up... and he would give it another go!

All the county and state garages UP here have end loaders with huge snowblowers hanging off the front. Haven't seen anything that they can't just motor on through.

Yep, we've seen them with big 4WD snowblowers before too. I think we just had so MUCH mess everywhere - that they had every possible piece of equipment out working.

Even on county or township roads, we've seen farm tractors out working everywhere. It seems as if they may have put the call out for help and people responded... or fellas just took it upon themselves to help open up roads. Not sure, but we've seen a huge number of tractors go by with blowers and buckets.

Illini John,

This would be where it would actually be fitting when someone says it wrong: "a tough road to hoe...". LOL.

I just came down I35 and there were parts where they only have about 1 1/2 lanes open because the drifts are 10 feet tall and the plows can't push it back any further. They had a smaller jd tractor with a fron mounted snow blower blowing some spots but even he was too small for the bad areas. Not going to take much to close the roads from now on this year.

My Dad used to run grader for NYSDOT and had both V and angle blades for it, Plowed lots of snow it that piece of iron. Many X-mas's had to wait for him to get home from plowing. Once he drove it home just to open presents and back to plowing he went.

Sw wisc good but not that great my back road plow got pushed over half the road is grass .had small wreck yesterday 2 guys meet at the top of the hill only 1 lane little guy took the snow bank tow truck came and got him sounds like tie rods got it. so slow down and keep praying it will be over soon i hope.
Did smell a skunk last night and it was bad enough to gag a maggot hopefully that one thinks springs coming

One of my back roads had a drift that was window high and came out on to the road far enough that the opening was just slightly wider than my car. The drift was about 80 yards long. Quite intimidating.

George, most of the time the road graders are set up with a V blade and a wing. They use the regular blade for lighter snow and the V for drifts with the wing knocking the now from either blade into the ditch.

Up here in West MN we haven't had the amounts of snow like they did in East and Southern MN. But we have in the past and the few farmers that are left here may or may not help out. The BTO dairy guys really don't have the time with 400 or more cow herds. The Beef guys and grain farmers will be out helping neighbors as needed. I myself do 2 In Laws places plus 2 friends who can't do their own. It's a total of 12 road miles just to get to them all.

As far as the blowers go the state can only justify so many. And when you get hit with a storm like that covering the area there just are not enough to go around. I some times think that the state and counties would be smart if they approached farmers and provided a good blower and was willing to pay for the farmer to use their tractors in the event of a bad snow. But then you'd have some of these farmers fighting over who got the blower/contract.

I think the snow plow is six wheeled road grader or "motor patrol" with a V-plow on the front and usually a large wing mounted on the right hand side.

Larry,
I should go around and take some photos of intersections... they are BAD.

Hopefully this week they will get some time to go around and open them up a bit. All one can do is to slowly nose-out to where you can HOPEFULLY see if it is safe to turn or cross the road.

George,

It's a big grader. If you look closely, you can see the wing... but it is up and out of the way, as he is just trying to bust through with the V plow.

jonf,

Must have been a long, slow trip home for you!

My husband had to work yesterday. He said the same thing... still places from Thursday's storm, where one could only get through by driving on the wrong side of the road as it was the only passable spot. (He only has a 2WD pickup.)

I'm sure all road crews are practically working 'round the clock right now.

farmerwithmutt,

There were a lot of accidents around here and people in the ditch... much of which would not have happened if people would just slow down.

Hope you are right that the skunk is a sign of spring!!!

No cudos to Indiana"s snow crews. They"ve done a poor job again this year. Either idiots managing or the old timers that knew how to maintain roads retired and the new guys are clueless.
